" In The Enemy at Home, D’Souza argues that “the cultural left and its allies in Congress, the media, Hollywood, the nonprofit sector, and the universities are the primary cause of the volcano of anger toward America that is erupting from the Islamic world."

Basically, Islam hates the West due to the West's continuing spiral of decadence from things like abortion, homosexuality, drug abuse and compassion towards criminals who get better treatment then the unborn.

Islam hates us because of everything liberals stand for.

So we have to be careful about simply describing a religion of one billion people as “violent.” This would be tactically imprudent even if it were true, but it is not true, so why repeat a canard that has the terrible effect of driving the traditional Muslims into the radical camp?

An appeal to FR, that I expect will go unheeded.

I don't think I can buy this basic concept that the Left is responsible for 9/11. That is like the nut cases who blame Pres Bush for 9/11 as some sort of conspiracy theory. I think the "illusions" that conservatives have about why we were attacked is closer to the "real" reasons.

Look - Islamic Jihadists HATE us for a multitude of reasons. You can pick your favorite attitudes from one side of the political spectrum or the other and blame same.

When those planes hit the WTC/Pentagon they didn't care whether they were killing Muslims, Jews, Christians, athiests, or what-ever. They were killing symbols of America. They hate ALL Americans - doesn't matter what your political or religious affiliations are.

"I’m saying it’s foolish to blame Islam when Islam has been around for 1,300 years and Islamic terrorism has been a problem for the past 25 years."

This is where I think he goes wrong. The specific tactics of suicide bombers and IED's may be recent inventions but the followers of Islam have been slaughtering people throughout the entire 1,300 history of Islam. I believe the recent rise in International killing by Islamists has more to do with the availability of oil money than anything else. Now they have an ability they didn't have before, aided by mass communication, cheap International transportation and lack of border security and internal national security.
Staking your future on a belief (hope?) that "moderate" Islamists really want to live with you in peace as long as you share some of their "moral values" is not only stupid but dangerous to your health and existence.

Why did the guys who did it, do it?

Because failures hate successes.

Period.

Attempting to concoct excuses beyond this obvious motivation is to become an apologist for the enemy.

The radical Muslims are against modernity and science and democracy.

Well, duh. That's what they say in their propaganda (which is honest at its core, as it is addressed to their less extreme co-religionists with the intent of swaying them to the extremist viewpoint).

And Bin Laden’s own views are quite different. In his Letter to America, issued shortly after 9/11, he said that America is the fount of global atheism and it is imposing its morally depraved values on the world.

Sorry, Dinnie, but I read the letter. It explicitly identifies democracy, freedom of religion, capitalism -- i.e. Western Civilization -- as "morally depraved values".

I'm saying it's foolish to blame Islam when Islam has been around for 1,300 years and Islamic terrorism has been a problem for the past 25 years.

Bull$#!^! They spread their religion by the sword a lot more than 25 years ago -- more like 25 years after Mohammad went into the religion business.

Already there have been working relationships between traditional Christians and traditional Muslims in the United Nations and some other international forums

Any and all such alliances should be revoked immediately, to be reconsidered if and when the "traditional Muslims" take sufficient* measures against their radical brethren.

*I'm thinking something involving a nice tasteful pyramid of heads.
