The new Democratic-led Congress is trying to put its mark on one of the most contentious environmental and economic problems within reach: climate change...
...Speaker Nancy Pelosi is moving to ramp up debates on energy and how to curb so-called greenhouse gases, which most scientists believe are accelerating global warming by trapping the sun's heat in the atmosphere. But the Californian already is discovering how controversial any effort will be -- even within her own party. Ms. Pelosi is expected to announce today that she is creating a select committee...
Her strategy is to raise the profile of the issue and press for action by early summer. In an interview last evening, Ms. Pelosi said she saw energy independence and climate-change legislation as part of the next phase of the Democratic agenda...
"Tomorrow, we finish our 100 hours, and I will talk about what comes next, and included in that is energy independence. Climate change is part of energy independence," she said...
By raising the issues' profile, Democrats say Ms. Pelosi will be better able to put pressure on the White House... But her effort is angering committee chairmen less eager to move quickly, particularly powerful Michigan Rep. John Dingell. The Michigan lawmaker has expressed his ire at what he considers an intrusion into his House Energy and Commerce Committee's jurisdiction...
Bills already circulating in the Senate have in common a mandatory cap on emissions, a step that, according to the White House, President Bush isn't prepared to advocate... However, industry and environmental groups see Mr. Bush as a potential broker who could help shape a consensus, particularly in the Senate, where 60 votes would be needed to overcome a filibuster promised by Oklahoma Republican Sen. James Inhofe.
The effort has enormous implications for American businesses and manufacturers...

I guess 100 hours lasts a long time when you work only 2 hours a day.
First, it was '100 hours...'
Then it was '100 session hours...'
Then it was '100 hours spent on our pet projects...'
Yes, and I am sure that those debates on climate change will somehow morph into the need for a "windfall profits" tax on Big Oil, outlawing SUV's, eliminating drilling off oru shores (where every other country can drill, i.e. China), hell, even a per mile driven tax.
Yes ladies and gentlemen, the democrat's new direction back to the economy of the Carter year's continues.
The article says that Dingell is mad because she's circumvented his committee jurisdiction. Yeah, right. He's mad because he knows that Pelosi and the Dem Congress are about to hand the US auto industry a death sentence.
This will be the undoing of Pelosi and the Dems. Her only hope is to pretend that she's doing something about it, drag it out, and then ultimately claim that she tried, but those evil Republicans blocked it.
I hope the lose, big time.
I( guess they will try to win the hearts and minds of Joe Sixpack by telling him he is an environmental criminal.
What was Al Gore doing about it when he was VP for 8 YEARS!!
Or, is it only a hot issue when a Republican is in the Oval office.
Hey, how about Superman getting off his butt and helping out?
Your chart explains why the bones of those very big(and hungry, hungry) hippos were found in Britain, of all places.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
They pick the coldest day of the year to bloviate on global warming.
So the Dems' "New Direction" turns out to be that of forming one 'select committee' after another.
I guess they think that will serve to create the illusion that they are actually DOING something worthwhile....
bttt
>>ramp up debates on energy and how to curb so-called
>>greenhouse gases, which "most" scientists believe are
>>accelerating global warming
Hmmm.....nice choice of words. For every scientist who claims we are responsible for global warming, I can come up with one who says it is hogwash.
Lost so much tax $$$ on the crop freeze that we gotta fergit bout globle warming,,but we won't, we're idiots!!!
I hope their bills get filibustered all the way to China in the Senate.
