When the Undergraduate Admissions Office revealed last month that early applications for spaces in the Class of 2011 had fallen 20 percent from the previous year, many in the University community, and many outside its confines, gasped at the seemingly gaudy statistic while fretting over the potential ramifications it would hold for dear old Duke.

RB: Our early decision applications went down in the middle of the fall. But I think yesterday and today we now know the count for our regular applications. We have the second highest number of applicants in the history of this university.
