Risk of Death Higher for Male Drivers
Ask News ^ | Jan 18, 2007 | SETH BORENSTEIN

That age-old stereotype about dangerous women drivers is shattered in a big new traffic analysis: Male drivers have a 77 percent higher risk of dying in a car accident than women, based on miles driven.

And the author of the research says he takes it to heart when he travels - his wife takes the wheel.

"I put a mitt in my mouth and ride shotgun," said David Gerard, a Carnegie Mellon University researcher who co-authored a major new U.S. road risk analysis.

The study holds plenty of surprises.

_The highway death rate is higher for cautious 82-year-old women than for risk-taking 16-year-old boys.

_New England is the safest region for drivers - despite all those stories about crazy Boston drivers.

_The safest passenger is a youngster strapped in a car seat and being driven during morning rush hour.

The findings are from Traffic STATS, a detailed and searchable new risk analysis of road fatality statistics by Carnegie Mellon for the American Automobile Association. Plans are to make the report public next week, but The Associated Press got an early look.

The analysis calculates that overall, about one death occurs for every 100 million passenger miles traveled. And it shows that some long-held assumptions about safety on U.S. highways don't jibe with hard numbers. It lists the risk of road death by age, gender, type of vehicle, time of day and geographic region.

"We are finding comparisons that are surprising all the time," said study co-author Paul Fischbeck, a Carnegie Mellon professor of social and decision sciences. "What is necessary now is to go through and do that second level of analysis to figure out why some of these things are true."

Funny -- my favorite observation was a lady driving down the freeway at rush hour, bumper to bumper at 70 MPH, with a newspaper open on the steering wheel, putting on make-up in the visor mirror AND talking on her cell phone.

Is this what kills more men ??? :-)

Not your fault. I saw the title and as soon I read the article it was exactly the same as the story I linked.

There are at least three postings, all with different titles and from different sources. I guess each outlet wanted its own unique headline :-)

No biggie, we get snarkier comments each time!

Here in Southern Cal. I see MEN ALL THE TIME, driving, talking on CELL PHONES at the same time, and NOT paying attention to traffic. I assume they are doing business while stuck in traffic. I also see a LOT of wrecks, and always wonder if it is same men on cell phones not paying attention then BAM!

It's hard to get killed in LA in a traffic accident. The traffic never gets above 25 MPH and if you get in a fender bender the other driver gets out and shoots you. Technically you didn't die as a result of the accident.

Male drivers have a 77 percent higher risk of dying in a car accident than women, based on miles driven.

I recall reading somewhere that teen boys and young men have higher insurance rates than females because of higher accident rates, but that the rate levels out to being about the same as females as the men get older.

I DO know that insurance rates for teen boys are higher than for teen girls, so there's probably some truth to it.

More men drive drunk, therefore more men die in accidents.

Sad, but true.

That's because the woman while driving down the four lane road in the far right lane in the morning while looking in the rearview mirror putting on her makeup, chatting on the cellphone and drinking her coffee suddenly realized she needed to turn left at the exit she was about to cross. She cranks the wheel hard left cutting across the path of the car to her left, proceeds across the intersection narrowly missing two oncoming vehicles a passes a within inches of a pedestrians in the middle of the crosswalk, breathes a sight of relief that she didn't miss her turn and never even considers adjusting her rear view mirror to survey the after effects of what she just did.

Given the teen boys I know, charging them $20,000 a year for auto insurance is a losing proposition.

I always enjoyed the line from "Fight Club":

paraphrasing: Actor Edward Norton: "Given enough time, the life expectancy of everyone drops to zero."

I saw a guy a few months ago eating a bowl of cereal while driving. And I don't mean oatmeal. I kept watching as we went down the road and it was confirmed when he dumped the milk at a light. He saw me shaking my head in disbelief.

Did the report mention that men probably drive more than
twice the miles that women do? If you consider that then
the fewer men die per miles driven than women. JMHO.
