Wouldn't it be awesome if this year, for the sake of the eyes (not to mention the state of mind and peace of heart), Laura got to sit in the Speaker's chair behind the president? You know how not all the Cabinet and not all the Supreme Court justices come to the SoTU, in case of some sort of calamity? Maybe this year they could put Pelosi in The Undisclosed Location too. snicker

Oh gosh, yes.... moved to an undisclosed location. As it is, I am going to shield my view with my right hand and hope I can block her out.

JAN, thank you so much for telling us the inside story on how the president spent Friday. The more I hear about his presidency, the more I admire him through and through.

It is the ultimate in aggravating that many, many days I have been working at my computer and knowing the Dose was just about to come up, and I have had to step away for this or that, and when I get back, I see it was posted within seconds after I had to leave the room. OR, the other aggravating scenario: I am the second or third person to post, but two minutes or so have elapsed after the first reply. To quote the one-legged Silas Wegg in "Bleak House," "It's more than flesh and blood can bear. No ... I'll go further. It's more than a wooden leg can bear!"

Dear Common Tator (not so common IMO), I do hope you will revisit this thread and continue to post your commentaries. I always learn from you. Am sorry about the recent dust-up but hope with all my heart it can be overcome and that you will return to advise and converse with your buds on Sanity Island.

It is my distinct pleasure to spread the good word about our much-maligned President.

On Friday, January 19, I posted this, along with the ping to the Dose.

Dear Dosers,

I've received inquiries in which Dosers have asked if we could refrain from using coarse language or sentiments in our posts on this thread. I pass on the requests while adding my wholehearted endorsement. If this doesn't apply to your posts, thank you for building up the spirit of Sanity Island.

A controversy erupted in a piggyback to that Dose, around posts 174 and 180, which have been removed.

Jim Robinson, the amiable founder and owner of FreeRepublic.com, has a long-standing policy: if controversy occurs among posters on one thread, they are not to take the controversy to other threads. So I am posting these remarks where the issue became an event.

rintense started this thread so we could know what America's President is doing. Conversations and comments about his presidency, policies, plans, nominations, legislative agenda, etc., have always been welcome here. Many who come to the thread have expressed a strong desire to keep this place a refuge from the grind and ugliness that can attend political debate, yet we have often successfully discussed President Bush's policies from differing points of view without anyone feeling diminished, attacked, or called names. This is to our mutual credit.

It is unfortunate that the recent posts, and some FRmails, have resulted in a FReeper deciding to leave not only the Dose, but FR. The damage does not end there: other communications resulted in many deeply hurt feelings when words rained down like blows. We cannot undo these things. The type of controversy that erupted was one of the very things I was asked by some Dosers to address, to ask that we refrain from.

We can each make a decision to agree to differ politely, to speak and to act in a spirit of civil discourse, no matter how stridently we may differ on certain subjects. President Bush is a very good role model for such a way of living. Those who remain can choose to bury hatchets and resume discourse, as George W. Bush has done so many times.

For the sake of the purpose for this thread, I hope all affected by recent events will look forward with an eye toward reconciliation, and help to bring this thread back to its whole purpose: receiving news and photos of the president's day among polite and considerate fellow Sanity Islanders.

For the sake of this thread remaining a refuge from heated political discussions, I should like to see the debate be let go. However, if folks feel a need to continue to discuss this on the Dose, I am asking that Jim Robinson's policies be adhered to: that the comments stay on the January 19, 2007 Dose and not be brought forward into future editions, and that personal attacks be omitted.

Gretchen, I can't thank you enough for your cool, wise leadership, not only on this matter, but regarding the Dose in general. It's my firm opinion that without you the Dose would not have continued as long as it has. In saying that, I mean absolutely no disrespect to any of the other Dose custodians, each of whom has also contributed to keeping it going. But I look to you for leadership as regards Dose matters, and you never fail in that regard. Now, as I just posted to Jonny, I don't want to risk keeping this matter going any longer, so I'll end my public comments here.
