LONDON, England (AP) -- Prince Charles has canceled a traditional skiing holiday in a bid to reduce his carbon footprint, his office said Saturday -- a day after campaigners and a government minister criticized his decision to fly to New York to collect an award for work on environmental issues.

Environment Secretary David Miliband expressed reservations Friday about the heir to the British throne traveling to the United States for the ceremony, while advocacy groups urged the prince to use a video link instead.

Prince Charles' Clarence House office said the prince had decided last year to cancel a regular skiing holiday to Switzerland as part of an effort to reduce the number of flights he takes.

Details of the prince's carbon footprint are scheduled to be published along with his annual office accounts later this year. The document will set out targets for the reduction of carbon emissions by his office and household.

Plane Stupid, a climate change group, and Britain's Green Party complained Friday that Prince Charles would be accompanied to the U.S. by an entourage of around 20 people, increasing the cost in carbon emission terms of the trip.

Why not demand he move into a 1 bedroom flat as well?
Make him take the tube instead of his armored limo.

There's only one reason for the British to maintain the monarchy: tourism.

Buckingham Palace is a nice structure, but I enjoyed the Imperial War Museum and the Cabinet War Rooms much more.

Both of our societies have become so celebrity-crazed it's pathetic.

It's got to be the inbreeding that makes these people such idiots. Kinda like wondering who's next in line of succession to become Emperor of the Ozarks and whether the fumes from their moonshine still will cause the sun to catch fire.

There does seem to be a really weak strain among the male royals.

Only the females have any guts and discipline.

It's going to be all uphill to get to a carbon-free world.

What you're seeing is just one more example of the Cheney/Rumsfeld/Bush/Halliburton Global Warming Machine.

Something must be done and soon otherwise it means the end of the polar bears.

OTOH that means more baby seals to club.

Genetic path -- who was that guy who gave up the throne for a woman, in the 30s? I think that did not speak well of him.

Really? I think that is one of the most romantic gestures in history and I admire him tremendously for making it. I would love to meet someone for whom I would make such a choice.

There was a VERY INTERESTING ommission in this CNN article...

Prince Tampon's trip to the U.S. was to collect a Environmental prize from the Scientist, former Vice President Algore!

"Prince Charles cancels ski trip to help save planet Sat Jan 20, 2007 4:12 PM GMT"

LONDON (Reuters) - Prince Charles, criticised for booking a trans-Atlantic flight to collect an environmental award, has cancelled a ski trip to Switzerland to reduce greenhouse gases, a palace source said on Saturday.

The decision not to take the annual holiday in Klosters was made some time ago and was part of the heir-to-throne's commitment to reduce his "carbon footprint", the source said.

Environment Minister David Miliband has questioned the need for the heir to the throne to fly to New York next week with a 20-strong entourage to collect the Global Environmental Citizen Prize from former U.S. vice-president Al Gore.

"Was it a particularly heavy award?," Miliband told London's Evening Standard newspaper. "A lot of business can be done by telephone and video link these days."

Buckingham Palace defended the Prince's trans-Atlantic trip, saying the two-day visit on January 27 and 28 was being made at the request of the Foreign Office and would include a number of other engagements.

But environmentalists accused the prince, renowned for his green leanings, of skating on thin ice.

"It's the equivalent of turning up to an Oxfam award in a stretch limo," said a spokesman for the Plane Stupid anti-flights campaign group. "It's a bad joke."

Prince Charles said last year he would include a measure of how his activities affected the environment in his next annual accounts, due this summer.

He also vowed to cut his carbon emissions by abandoning chartered planes and trains in favour of scheduled services."

LOL! Charles and Al are pair of vapid "Junk Scions", with nothing better to do but live off their inheritances--- and irritate the rest of us.
