Our kids are in public schools, but we work with them a lot. Especially with the math facts. The teachers slide in instruction on the facts as well, but on the sly as they will get in trouble by the school board if they even teach it. (Its nuts!)
One daughter can do math whichever way she wants/needs to. The other daughter is fine by the facts, but the fuzzy math is confusing (to her and me!).
One example was something like add 17+13.
In fuzzy math:
20+10 = 30.
20-17 = 3
13-10=3
so 30-3+3 = 30.
We told her to do it the regular way first and give your answer. Then try the fuzzy way, and if the teacher gives you a hard time 'cuz you can't do the weird way let us know. (Haven't had a problem anymore).
Let me see if I understand you correctly. If a parent chooses to place their children in public schools - they don't care?
I am a parent of three public school children and a teacher. I am very proud of my children's accomplishments and ability to witness to others. We stay because we refuse to give up. We "fight" not only for ourselves but for the students who have no one to stand with them. A teacher's hand is not as "tied" as many people seem to think and most parents really do care - they just need better direction. Those of us who stay are making a difference - one battle at a time.
By the way, I thought the video was great. I passed it along using the district email.
