At least he changed his mind as he got older, similar to Mitt Romney and some other Republican candidates.
At the the time the SCOTUS ruled Roe v Wade the law of the land, Mitt Romney favored abortion rights and said so. Romney continued being pro-abortion until 2004-2005 timeframe. When he decided to become pro-life for purposes of political expediency. Romney is not a principled conservative on the abortion issue. So voting for Romney remains a big question mark in my mind.
Ronald Reagan did no such thing. Reagan never supported abortion on demand and never changed his position. He remained a strong pro-lifer, with exceptions for rape, incest and to save the health/life of the mother. Reagan did regret signing the liberal 1967 California abortion rights act, which specifically centered around the three exceptions. Reagan was concerned that doctors would find a way to get around the law, and they did. And they still are. Most pro-lifers today support the three exceptions as legitimate in the overall context of abortion ethics. Reagan's decision was based on his principled conservatism. Not on political expedency.
