Israel pledges 'two-state solution' (at Davos World Economic Forum)

Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas have pledged to forge a peace between their countries, calling the vision of two states, side by side, the only path.

With Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas watching, Livni told the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum that a Palestinian state is "not an illusion. It's there, it's achievable".

Livni urged the international community to support moderates in the Middle East.

She told Abbas that "compromising with extremists will not promote anything" - a clear reference to Hamas and other militant groups.

Abbas listened intently, nodding his head, and afterwards greeted her warmly with a long handshake.

He reiterated that if he cannot form a unity government with Hamas officials, he will move to call early elections, but gave no specific timetable.

Abbas was addressing a large crowd of political leaders, corporate bosses and others at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting.

He said that such an agreement would help strengthen the hands of moderates in the region and fight extremism of all types.

The Palestinians do not want a "two" state solution, their aim is to kill every Jew...it won't end till the Lord returns.

Abbas is the minority government losing in the election to Hamas that says no peace. Not sure what the value of this really is at this point.

..................

That's been the case since Oslo, 14 years ago. The stumbling block is the palestinian ongoing refusal to recognize Israel's right to exist.

With people like Hanan Ashrawi on the PLC (she quit in 1996 when Arafat began to look like negotiating), this remains a dream.

And where do they propose this second yet equal State will be? Who in the ME is willing to give up a few acres to form such a State? Egypt? Syria? Jordan? Iraq? Iran?

If the Palestinians want a piece of property, the other Arab Countries in the ME should be magnanimous and offer land to them.

Yeah, right. Seriously Sarcastic.

Why does Israel have to say this?? Israel has been committed to a two state solution since Oslo, in the early '90's. It's the Pali's who have repeatedly spurned the outstretched hand. In 2000 Arafart turned down a Pali state and founded Al Aqsa to send waves of homicide bombers into Israel.
