I was pleasantly surprised however by the National Geographic channel's documentary aired last Sunday about the terror of Saddam's regime, "Inside Saddam's Reign of Terror." It was one of the most illuminating things I've seen about just how blood thirsty Saddam and his people were, and I've read a lot about Saddam's regime and seen a lot of documentaries. It used a lot of recently captured footage from Saddam's own archives of the depravity of the regime as they proudly captured it on video.
Only a completely unfeeling brute could have watched that documentary and still feel we should not have overthrown the Baathist mass murderers. It makes it clear Saddam was Hitler lite, determined to murder his own people, not just those who were minorities but those who were in the majority and to wreak havoc across the region.
I wish every American could see it, because if they could support for the war would go back well above 50%. But then maybe I'm placing too much faith in the good sense of Americans who haven't been showing much of late. Anyway, the programming person who authorized the showing of the documentary was probably fired Monday morning.
Yeah, I hold out hope for the public too- but either they really haven't been showing too much sense lately, or the polls aren't truly representative- but I think probably the public has forgotten what patriotism and freedom really means.
