Dems Should Dump Ethically Challenged Harry Reid
Real Clear Politics ^ | 30 Jan 2007 | Dennis Byrne

Instead of talking in sweeping platitudes about "ethics reform," Senate Democrats might want to prove they mean it by dumping their ethically challenged majority leader, Harry Reid.

The Nevada lawmaker has been implicated in yet another land scheme that this time could net him a tidy $50,000 to $290,000. Los Angeles Times investigative reporters Chuck Neubauer and Tom Hamburger, this week revealed that Reid paid $166 an acre for valuable northern Arizona land whose market value, according to the county assessor, four years ago was worth $2,144 an acre.

Who would be a big enough fool to sell Reid the land at such a ludicrously low price? A long-time pal who would financially benefit from some obscure legislation that the senator has often sponsored.

This is the scumbag who went to the Inca ruins instead of Gerald Ford's funeral. He was lounging about for four days at a $1000 a day luxury resort instead of doing his civil duties as Senate leader. Then he went and cozied up to the two worst leaders in south america this side of hugo chavez: evo morales of bolivia and rafael correa of ecuador where he was said to have had a grand old time. i think we have seen enough of reid and all his freelancing that is putting us all in danger and padding his pockets. He's done enough damage, it's time for him to go.

Wonder who thinks they`re the smartest, Durbin or Biden? Wonder who they would call if they had to install a lightbulb?

The most interesting line in the article:

Dennis Byrne is a Chicago Tribune op-ed columnist and freelance writer. Email: dennis@dennisbyrne.net

Hey Dennis, I take it the Trib wasn't interested in your investigative work?

Shocks the hell out of me.

He could have never have risen to the his current position had he not been ethically challenged.

What's the appointment scheme in Nevada? The governor is a Pubbie.

Hell would freeze over before the Rats would cast away a crook if the balance of the Senate is at stake. Shoot, they already have Tim Johnson practically doing a "Weekend at Bernie's" routine so that the SD governor doesn't appoint a Republican.

Yep under NRS 304.030, the governor appoints a Senator in case of vacancy. The text of NRS 304.030 is as follows:

Governor to appoint qualified person upon vacancy in office. In case of a vacancy in the office of United States Senator caused by death, resignation or otherwise, the Governor may appoint some qualified person to fill the vacancy, who shall hold office until the next general election and until his successor shall be elected and seated.(Added to NRS by 1960, 281)

Interestingly, under the Nevada Constitution, until repealed by referendum in 2004, the governor was supposed to call a special session of the legislature to fill the vacancy. Under that scenario, the Rats would win because they control the State House by a larger margin than the Pubbies control the Nevada Senate.

In any event, that crooked bastard Reid won't step down, especially with the balance of power at stake in the Senate.

Sure Reid is ethically challenged, but how does he stand out from all the other Dems? Even if their hands aren't dirty from taking swag, their minds are filthy with lib "ethics". Dinesh D'Souza is wrong about libs being responsible for 9/11. Islamic terrorists are responsible. But libs are responsible for dragging America into slimy pit of coarse "values" and hedonism as an end to itself.

Byrne is one of the few Trib columnists worth reading. I can't think of another conservative on their staff. Maybe John Kass, but he usually writes about strictly local matters. Byrne is as good as the top national conservative columnists. His columns deserve a wider reading as this column proves. Plus he frequently adds a little humor to his barbs.
