Reporter Disputes Ari Fleischer's Testimony at CIA Leak Trial (David Gregory told of Wilson's wife)

WASHINGTON — A former Time Magazine correspondent says former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer got it wrong when he testified under oath Monday at the CIA leak trial that he disclosed to the journalist the identity of a secret CIA operative.

"I assumed that in some context, my name would come up," John Dickerson, Slate Magazine's chief political correspondent, told FOXNews.com on his way Tuesday to cover the trial. "I didn't realize it would come up in that fashion."

Fleischer took the stand Monday to answer questions in the trial of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney. Libby is charged with perjury and obstruction relating to the investigation of who outed CIA operative Valerie Plame.

Fleischer also testified that he first heard about Plame from Libby over lunch on July 7, 2003. Libby says he first learned about Plame on July 10 from NBC reporter Tim Russert.

Dickerson said he was surprised when he heard his name — and his photo popped up on the big screen in the courtroom — when Fleisher took the stand.

"I was at the Scooter Libby trial to cover it, and all of a sudden, I found myself in the middle of the case," Dickerson wrote.

This whole thing reeks to high heaven and makes my brain hurt.

It's crap like this that almost makes me want to dedicate my life to watching Oprah and American Idol.

"My grandma used to tell me stories about Valerie Plame when I was little"

I keep mixing up the Valerie Plame with the Andrea Doria.

MSNBC expended a lot of oxygen talking about how scandalous it was that Plame's name was revealed. If it turns out that they knew all along who Joe Wilson's wife was, what do they look like?

I've wondered a lot about Ari ever since he announced his sudden resignation..... before that I just thought he was a well-meaning but dull and ineffective PR spokesman. Once he ran out the door just as Pflamegate was heating up, it made me suspect that he had said/done something he shouldn't have, or else he knew about something that he didn't want to be associated with..... Who IS Ari Fleischer?

I'm so glad we have Tony Snow instead of Ari in that spokesman role, but I'd still like to know what the whole story with Ari might turn out to be.....

The key issue for the defense SHOULD be, does it even matter if someone mentioned Valarie Plame, aka Wilson, worked at the CIA? She hadn't been in the field for a number of years, so it appears that telling people she worked for the CIA wasn't any kind of crime.

After Armitage was "outed", media went silent on this, except when having to report they kept falling back on usual spin of "accused of", "on trial for", "suspected of" nonsense.

The media doesn't want to be a part of this trial, they've done their damage and want this over, pronto.

Prediction: I wouldn't want to be in Libby's shoes with my fate in the hands of a DC jury. Too bad he didn't go for a change of venue.

Texas had a law that all Texas Bar members were considered "Officers of the Court".
And as such they were considered under oath at all times.

I do not know if this law was repealed or just ignored!

I think it might have been that T-shirt that says "Hang 'em All!"

Personally I would be reluctant to tell anybody called "Scooter" anything. But hey that's just me.

I am sure I told everyone in the press at one point that Plame worked for the CIA and that was somewhere before or after she outed herself ten years before Scooter did or did he. I just can't remember.

They all knew. The Wilsons went gallivanting around Washington together on the social scene with reporters all around so anyone knowing her name as Valerie then hearing "Wilson's Wife" would assume Valerie Wilson.

That's the reason Fitzgerald insisted that this shouldn't even be mentioned in this trial - that's why defense should impeach his reasons and motives for the "investigation" that should have never started...

Nifong-ing Fitzgerald should be part of defense strategy

I think it was when they asked me if I could put aside my feelings about cocaine to give the "defendant" a fair trial and I said no.

They seemed astounded.

Exactly! Valerie Plame Wilson was running round getting her picture taken, trying to look like a sleazy Sharon Stone. On that she did a fairly good job.

Seems like there was a lot of reading and talking going on with that plane trip where someone left that memo lying around. (I haven't bothered working hard to keep track of details since this turned into broad farce...)

If she's not covered by the Covert Personnel statute, isn't this more like drawing 'first lymph'??? LOL

But Libby has worked both sides of lots of aisles, he has enemies that are more secret than Mrs. Wilson, I would suspect. ;-)

It was made clear earlier that Ari was already on his way out because he was getting married and had a job offer.

The people who were sure they had 'leaked' before Novak's column have all resigned, haven't they?

I guess Bush didn't lie... ;-)
