NCC chief calls "barbaric execution of Saddam Hussein"

President George W. Bush is promising a surge in troops in the war-torn country, ostensibly to help quell sectarian violence and stabilize Baghdad.

Friday, January 12, 2007 Ekklesia

The head of the leading US ecumenical body, the National Council of Churches USA, has described the call for more troops to be sent to Iraq as "morally unsupportable".

President George W. Bush is promising a "surge" in troops in the war-torn country, ostensibly to help quell sectarian violence and stabilize Baghdad.

"This escalation of troop presence only promises to guarantee an escalation in American and Iraqi deaths", says the Rev Dr Bob Edgar of NCCUSA today. The council brings together mainstream American denominations with a combined membership of 45 million.

He continued: "Particularly in the wake of the barbaric execution of Saddam Hussein - an act that reflects not the ideals of democracy and justice, but rather mocks them - and an act that promises only to breed more violence, as only a violent act can - one would think that the United States would immediately seek to bring about a change of policy. Sending more troops is not a change in policy, nor is it even a change in strategy; it is more of the same."

"NCC chief calls "barbaric execution of Saddam Hussein"

'Barbaric' describes alot of things going on in the Middle East. What's his point?

Sounds like Jimmy Carter may have held a "revival" in the NCC!

I'll pay attention when this POS refers to the barbaric execution of Daniel Pearl.

as "morally unsupportable".

Sadly, that, "morally" and religiously are the reasons that I would never support the NCC. It is an extension of the political realm (United Nations) and not the church's realm.

"The council brings together mainstream American denominations"

The Council is a left wing group which in no way represents the membership of those denominations. Believe me, I've seen these people in action.

Funny how the MSM never mention that Edgar is a former RAT congressman.

I have no interest in the NCC, except a passing curiosity -- Was it "taken over" by the leftists, or was it established as a marxist out fit from the get-go?

I should hope that Saddam's execution was barbaric. I'd hate to think that it didn't cause the creep pain and anguish.

Crying for the rich, powerful, violent and corrupt while silent about the suffering of Saddam's poor victims.

How like the National Council of Churches.

"Funny how the MSM never mention that Edgar is a former RAT congressman"

Exactly. He's a 6-term liberal democratic congressman from Pennsylvania. If it was a conservative organization with a 6-term GOP Congressman they'd mention it at every turn, "just putting out there" that it might be improper for a politician to be heading a "religious" organization.

So by his complaint, is he suggesting that islam is inherently barbaric? That the Iraqi people are inherently violent?

Maybe he should go to Iraq personally and "correct" the Iraqi people? He could go from mosque to mosque and explain the NCC version of "path of righteousness."

No, he is really saying that the US is barbaric - he is implying that the USA had Saddamm hanged. its all the fault of the war. I don't respect this church-lady because his org never brings up the crimes of the communists and of Saddams only the alleged ones by the US.

The National Council of Churches USA has long since been co opted as a front group for the Socialist and Marxist movements in this country. Just ignore everything they say and you will be fine.

Well, he wasn't shredded or slowly sawed from his head. All things considered he was very humanely treated.
