Eight arrested after terror raids

Home Secretary John Reid has been kept informed of developments

Eight people have been arrested under the Terrorism Act after early morning raids in Birmingham.

Police say a number of addresses in the city have been secured and sealed off after the raids and are now being searched by officers.

The operation was led by the Midlands counter terrorism unit with support from West Midlands Police officers.

The eight are being held "on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism".

In a statement, the force asked for the "continued support and co-operation of the public".

"Our message to people living in the West Midlands is to remain vigilant," the statement added.
