looking for article on Bush saying he would resign the assault weapon ban

Posted on 01/31/2007 5:04:12 AM PST by Engine82

A friend was asking about a statement President Bush made that went something to the effect that he would resign the assault weapon ban if it came on his desk. Does anyone have a link to such a post here?

Resign or re-sign?

Big difference.

Knowing the agenda that he is pushing, I don't think it was resign....my guess is that it was re----sign.

Reminds me of a hand-written sign on a coffee machine here at work...

Please push the Brew button only once!

Do NOT REPRESS!

The Senate approved a renewal of the ban earlier this year, but the provision was part of a broader bill that included other measures opposed by the White House. House GOP leaders have given little indication that they plan to back an extension of the ban, and President Bush -- who said during the 2000 campaign that he would support an extension -- has not pushed the issue.

White House spokeswoman Claire Buchan said that Bush "supports the reauthorization of the current assault weapons ban." She noted that "the president's views are well known" among GOP leaders in Congress.

Interesting, especially in light of "reports" that City Gangs are banding together with unprecidented haste and may be used for Urban control if there is martial law.....hmmmmmmmm?? Wonder if the plans are completed yet and the training in its stages......

A False Ad About Assault Weapons

A new Moveon PAC ad implies machine-guns are becoming legal, which isn't true. And it blames Bush, even though Bush said he would have extended the ban on assault weapons.

Well this is going to come back and bite him if it does...No big secret there...

I believe the intent was to embolden the (former) Republican majority at that time to NOT allow another AWB to get to his desk...

President Bush saying he would sign it, would probably not be what he'd like to do, but he wanted Congress to pony up and make sure it didn't see the light of day after the sunset-ing of the previous Clinton attack on our right to keep and bear arms...

But being the strategist that he is, it is my opinion that President Bush, and even back when he was govenor of my state, was not a staunch, or vocal supporter of the Right to Keep and Bear Arms...I do believe he supports the individual right, but I believe he feels he should not be a "one" issue politician...So it is probably never really been at the top of his priority list...And unfortunately I believe he is right to lead this way...Just be ready to protect it when that threat crosses his desk...

Even though he says that he'd sign it...I believe it is more of a political dare to liberals and the gun-control crowd to act themselves...Let the burn be more on them to get this through...My gut tells me he'll VETO it, at this particular juncture in his administration...What will he lose??? Absolutely nothing if he does VETO it...

Now that the political majority has changed to a more liberal lean in Congress...Yes, our liberties and freedoms to Keep and Bear Arms is threatened...And there are just now forces waking up to this fact...And they are already filing and creating all sorts of challenges to our rights...

We can only hope that these threats can be thwarted at the executive level when push comes to shove...At least for the next two years...

After that...I am not very sure how the battle will be waged...

But all of this is only my personal opinion and observations, obviously...

[sarcasm] That's because terrorists buy their small arms and explosives at gun shows because of the "Gun Show Loophole". [/sarcasm]

He did say it,

It was about June before his reelection. I remember calling him several choice words.

There legal in Mass, and if they're allowed here I can't imagine anywhere they wouldn't be.

Only about 100,000 (one for every 1000 adult male citizens) are legal and expensive, if they were on a certain registry in 1986. All other machine guns, including all made in the past 21 years and into the future, are inherently illegal for a citizen to possess.

Like I said, some MGs are legal (in some states, for some people, after arduous paperwork and transfer tax), but MOST are not.
