Do you have the actual quote? The quotes that I've seen have the word "first".

Let's parse this statement.

Mainstream - means liberal. If you take a look at the Republican candidates - Steele, Swann, Blackwell - and take a look at those prominent blacks who support conservative causes - Sowell, Keyes, et al - please tell me again who is more articulate.

Why does it matter if he said "first" or not? Just the terms "clean" and "articulate" are enough to finish his candidacy. I think he will be roasted by everyone for this, liberals included.
