(AP) NEW YORK -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has canceled her first presidential campaign visit to New Hampshire this weekend because the stepfather of her husband, former President Clinton, is seriously ill.
"Due to the illness of President Clinton's stepfather Dick Kelley, Senator Clinton will unfortunately have to postpone her trip to New Hampshire this weekend. She looks forward to rescheduling her trip as soon as possible," campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Hanley said Wednesday.
Hanley did not elaborate on the nature of Kelley's illness. But two sources close to the Clinton family said Kelley had cancer and was near death at his home in Hot Springs, Ark. The sources spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
Kelley, a former food brokerage executive, married Bill Clinton's mother, Virginia, in 1982. He was her fourth husband.
He has remained close to the Clintons since Virginia Kelley's death in 1994.
Sen. Clinton, the front-runner for the 2008 Democratic Party nomination, campaigned in Iowa, another key early voting state, last weekend. She was scheduled to spend Saturday and Sunday traveling through New Hampshire, which hosts the first presidential primary in 2008.
"We were of course looking forward to her visit, and there was a lot of excitement. But we're hoping there's still a good chance she'll be coming back in the month of February," said state Senate president Sylvia Larsen, an influential New Hampshire Democrat.
