Well, one thing's abundantly clear about who will actually defend our rights to say what we believe: It isn't the hundreds who have written me saying they are soldiers or veterans or war supporters or real Americans -- who also advise me to move to another country, to get f@##d, or to die a painful, violent death.
Contrary to the typically inaccurate and overstated assertion in dozens of blogs, hundreds of comments, and thousands of e-mails I've received, I've never written that soldiers should "shut up," quit whining, be spit upon, or that they have no right to an opinion.
I said I was bothered by the notion that "the troops" were somehow becoming hallowed beings above society, that they had an attitude that only they had the means - or the right - to judge the worthiness of the Iraq endeavor.
I was dead wrong in using the word mercenary to describe the American soldier today.
These men and women are not fighting for money with little regard for the nation. The situation might be much worse than that: Evidently, far too many in uniform believe that they are the one true nation. They hide behind the constitution and the flag and then spew an anti-Democrat, anti-liberal, anti-journalism, anti-dissent, and anti-citizen message that reflects a certain contempt for the American people.
What I've heard ever since my article "The Troops Also Need to Support the American People" was published on Tuesday are a lot of people telling ME to shut up and be grateful for the sacrifices others are making.

The Troops Also Need to Support the American People
I was dead wrong in using the word mercenary to describe the American soldier today.... The situation might be much worse than that....
Thanks for clearing that up!
This guy stepped over the line with the last article. This one goes beyond the pale.
Criky, when you see the people defending you as a threat, it just might be time to go in for treatment.
The author, Arkin, is obviously just looking for attention. No different from any miscreant in a classroom.

Let me be the first on this thread: SHUT UP!
I didn't know the mentally disabled could work as journalists.
You know that his editor just put him in for a raise and that the publisher will give it to him. Why? Because it's the Washington Post!
I wager that 99.5% of anti-war hippies who claim to "Support the Troops" have never sent a care package.
and here:
Evidently, far too many in uniform believe that they are the one true nation. They hide behind the constitution and the flag and then spew an anti-Democrat, anti-liberal, anti-journalism, anti-dissent, and anti-citizen message that reflects a certain contempt for the American people.
____
Only a contempt for stupid people Mr. Journalist, and allies of the enemy, either unintended or intentional, of which you are a charter member.
They support the troops.
"The American people" he is talking about consist of moonbats, leftists and the habitually uninformed.
And he piles on more insults.
The troops don't have contempt for the American people - but I do notice from talking to soldiers that they have a generalized contempt for quitters, losers and lazy people.
That would probably include not only William Arkin but also 95% of his relatives, friends, acquaintances and colleagues.
Arkin probably thinks that everyone in America is like him and his nearest and dearest.
Luckily, we're not.
Mr. Arkin has hit bottom and brought in excavating equipment.
I would likely be having a long and interesting conversation with the FBI were I to openly express my opinion of what fate should befall the esteemable Mr. Arkin and his employer.
Someone take the shovel away from this guy.
Ummm, on second thought, never mind.
I don't wish any harm to Mr. Arkin. Anyway, people like him are useful for comic relief.
Oh heavens! Most of them are mentally disabled...aka as liberal...it is a mental illness.
SHUT UP AND BE GRATEFUL FOR THE SACRIFICES OTHERS ARE MAKING
Huh? It's virtually a requirement for employment in the trade.
