:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
How al-Qaida Fared in 2006
-Full Story-

In 2006, agents of al-Qaida, as well as those inspired by its ideology, continued their attacks. Violence in Iraq intensified, and Afghanistan saw its bloodiest year since 2001.

Despite worsening chaos on those fronts, counterterrorist forces arrested and killed high-profile terrorists and kept the West free from attack. But these actions don't appear to have weakened the appeal of al-Qaida's agenda. "Home-grown" militants around the world joined its jihad, as regional fighting heightened perceptions of a global war on Islam.

Here's an assessment of some of the most significant gains and losses for al-Qaida last year: Read more..

YOU are a wealth of information on TM. Thanks for your posts and links - so much appreciated.

Reversal of early VCJD symptoms may one day be possible

Snip: vCJD in humans, BSE in cattle (mad cow disease) and scrapie in sheep are all forms of a brain degenerative disease where abnormal versions of proteins called "prions" clog up the brain synapses and stop messages passing between cells. The abnormal prions get into the brain and reproduce by making the natural prions change shape into the unnatural form. Eventually the brain develops a spongy-like form.

Humans get vCJD from eating BSE infected meat products and also from receiving the blood of someone who is infected.

Smelling your food may kill you

Snip: To explore things further, they worked with flies that carried a mutation that prevents the proteins that perceive odorants from making their way to the surface of their nerve cells, leaving the flies unable to smell. Female flies that ate a normal diet but lacked this gene saw their lifespans shoot up by over 50 percent (males were affected, but not as dramatically). Even losing one of the two copies was enough to raise lifespan by about 25 percent. The results indicate that, to an extent, smelling your food is lethal. It doesn't account for the full longevity effect, however, as cutting back on calories in the mutants pushed survival out to even longer periods.

Banning the letter "X" and other Saudi tales

Snip: I've said before that we're not fighting a war between the West and Islam but between the 21st and the 12th centuries. Here's more proof: Saudi Arabia's top religious leaders–who have declared jihads, ordered women cloaked head to toe, and fostered extremism worldwide–may now ban the letter "X" because it resembles the Christian cross. This peculiar news comes from a New York Sun story by the estimable Youssef Ibrahim, the Egyptian-born former New York Times reporter. The Saudis' latest fatwa on "X" comes from their highest religious authority, the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice– a body so sage that in 1974 it declared the Earth flat.

U.K. Mosques Exposed: If you need more evidence about the role of our pals in Riyadh, check out Undercover Mosque, a new documentary by Britain's Channel 4 program Dispatches. The producers put an undercover reporter into mosques run by some of the U.K.'s most prominent Islamic groups, which publicly present a face of being moderate and mainstream. The result: a chilling hour's worth of calls to jihad, hatred of infidels and democracy, and medieval attitudes toward women and gays. Behind the spread of extremism in British mosques, the program finds, is Saudi Arabia, through its funding of imams, schools, books, and DVDs. Could the same thing be happening in America? It already has. See the Center for Religious Freedom's 2005 study of U.S. mosques and their follow-up report on Saudi textbooks.

Chop Chop Square: Finally, here's a bit on the Saudis' charming custom of chopping off heads and other appendages. Back in November, Lebanon's LBC TV scored an interview with the man it called "the most renowned executioner in Saudi Arabia," Abdallah bin Sa'id al-Bishi (the gentleman pictured above). Under sharia, or Islamic law, Saudi Arabia still severs the heads, arms, and hands of those deemed guilty of various crimes–usually in a public square. The sentence comes the old-fashioned way, by sword. As the LBC correspondent said of al-Bishi, "There is no negotiating with him once the heads have ripened." Here's an excerpt, courtesy of the folks at MEMRI:

First TV host: When you behead more than three or four people at once, does it affect you? My second question is: Do you need a break between executions? Does it affect you or not?

Abdallah al-Bishi: Allah be praised, there is nothing to it. Three, four, five, or six–there is nothing to it. It's entirely normal. An execution is an execution, and as long as the person stands straight ... as long as the person stands straight, it makes our job much easier.

Afghan, Coalition Forces Kill Taliban Fighters

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Feb. 2, 2007 – Afghan National Army soldiers and coalition forces killed more than 10 Taliban fighters today in a small-arms engagement near the village of Farah in Farah province, Afghanistan.
The battle occurred after Taliban fighters attacked an Afghan army checkpoint. The Afghan National Army, along with coalition forces, immediately responded with direct fire.

One Afghan soldier was killed in the engagement, and two were wounded.

In another operation, Afghan and coalition forces conducted combat operations against terrorists in the Bermel district of Paktika province today.

Coalition forces spotted a group setting up rockets and engaged the group with indirect fire. The forces requested, and received, air support to eliminate the threat. Coalition aircraft dropped two munitions on the site and another one on five personnel moving into a dry river bed.

A ground patrol moved to the site and confirmed that two were killed, and another five are suspected dead.

A fatwa on the letter X, unbelievable. I have a difficult time with the fact that the U.S. considers the Saudis to be our buddies. They seem to be such a barbaric and repressive bunch, Abdallah bin Sa'id al-Bishi being a prime example of such.

I sure am glad I was born an infidel in the good ole USA. Thanks for posting MamaD.

State DOT Workers Sickened By Powder Found Near Highway
EST February 2, 2007

MERIDEN, Conn. -- Four employees of the state Department of Transportation were sickened by a suspicious powder they encountered near near Interstate 91 Friday afternoon. A state DOT spokesman said the workers were clearing brush when they found a 5-gallon container off the road near exit 17 in Meriden.

A puff of yellowish powder came out when one of the workers kicked the container to see what it contained. The workers said the powder irritated their eyes, noses and throats. They were taken to MidState Medical Center by ambulance as a precaution to be checked.

I-91 was not closed, but state police and environmental workers have been on the scene for the last few hours to check and move the container. Officials said they still don't know what the substance is or who left it there.

A fatwa on the letter X, unbelievable.

Sesame Street will have to remove that letter as soon as the ACLU gets word of this. I agree 100% it's difficult to absorb the relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia as "buddies."

The whole concept of barbarism, Sharia law, and hatred (and justified killing and lying to) of infidels is an obstacle not easily overcome IMHO.

Thanks for that post Oorang. Anyone flying these days needs to give themselves extra time for connections in case of airport evacuations and shutdowns, which as of late have become more prevalent.

"Sleeper Cells in the United States and Canada"
American Thinker ^ | February 02, 2007 | Dave Gaubatz

Posted on 02/02/2007 7:16:58 PM PST by neverdem

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "There is every reason to suspect that we will endure suicide missions by Islamist sleeper cells. They are already in place. They are waiting for the right time. I know this from experience.

I have worked over 15 years as a U.S. Federal Agent, a U.S. State Department Arabic linguist, and the first civilian Federal Agent deployed into Iraq at the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Since returning from Iraq I have been involved in terrorism analysis, specifically the mindset of terrorists. During my extensive research on sleeper cells I have talked with hundreds of people from the Middle East from all walks of life, and have talked with Iraqi Government officials, Iraqi military, and Iraqi police officers. In addition I have interviewed numerous counter-terrorism specialists in the U.S. and abroad. In the last year alone I have trained over 4000 U.S. Law Enforcement officers in Basic Investigative Arabic and counter-terrorism. The conclusion of my research is the title of this article."
