How al-Qaida Fared in 2006

In 2006, agents of al-Qaida, as well as those inspired by its ideology, continued their attacks. Violence in Iraq intensified, and Afghanistan saw its bloodiest year since 2001.

Despite worsening chaos on those fronts, counterterrorist forces arrested and killed high-profile terrorists and kept the West free from attack. But these actions don't appear to have weakened the appeal of al-Qaida's agenda. "Home-grown" militants around the world joined its jihad, as regional fighting heightened perceptions of a global war on Islam.

Circus agent pleads guilty to smuggling aliens and visa fraud

ORLANDO- A former acrobatic performer who resides here has pleaded guilty to charges of inducing aliens to enter the United States illegally and to making false statements in visa applications, Assistant Attorney General Alice S. Fisher, U.S. Attorney Paul I. Perez for the Middle District of Florida, and Special Agent in Charge Robert Weber for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Office of Investigations in Tampa announced today.

Kristo Ivanov, 70, entered the plea today before U.S. District Court Judge Donald P. Dietrich. In his plea agreement, Ivanov admitted that from 2001 through Feb. 2006, he personally helped as many as 870 aliens enter or remain in the United States through fraudulent means. He prepared visa applications for the aliens that falsely stated that they were circus performers coming to work in Florida circuses. In fact, none of the aliens had been hired by any of the circuses listed in the visa applications. Rather, the visa applications were simply a means for the aliens to enter or remain in the United States. Ivanov charged each alien from $500 to $2,500 to prepare the applications.

“Ivanov admits to helping hundreds of illegal aliens into the United States under false pretenses so that he could benefit financially,” said Assistant Attorney General Fisher. “We will not allow this type of exploitation of our immigration system, which poses a risk to the security of our nation.”

BAGHDAD, Iraq -Coalition Forces killed four terrorists and detained 29 suspected terrorists during raids targeting foreign fighters and the al-Qaida in Iraq network Saturday morning.
During a raid in Fallujah, Coalition Forces targeted a terrorist with known ties to a foreign fighter network. As ground forces approached the targeted building, three armed terrorists attempted to fire on them.
Coalition Forces killed the three armed terrorists and detained 10 suspected terrorists.

West of Tarmiyah, Coalition Forces targeted terrorists with ties to the al-Qaida in Iraq network. Upon approaching the objective, one suspected terrorist began advancing towards Coalition Forces.

Coalition Forces told the man to get on the ground. The man complied at first and then got back up and charged toward Coalition Forces with what appeared to be a grenade. Coalition Forces used proper escalation of force to mitigate the threat.
Upon searching the man, Coalition Forces determined the man was charging at them with a rock in his hand instead of a grenade. The man died from his wounds. Coalition Forces detained eight suspected terrorists during this raid.

During an operation in Tarmiyah, five suspected terrorists were detained. Intelligence reports indicated that the suspects are involved in al-Qaida in Iraq kidnapping operations, improvised explosive devices emplacement and foreign terrorist safe house activities. Coalition Forces also uncovered a weapons cache consisting of numerous AK-47s, several pistols, wire spools, 60mm mortar rounds and a pressure plate.

Four suspected terrorists operating a foreign fighter safe house were detained in Ramadi.

In Kalar, two suspects with ties to foreign fighter facilitation were detained.

Coalition Forces are working diligently to eliminate foreign terrorists and al-Qaida supporters who are trying to hijack the development and building of a new stable and peaceful Iraq.

150 knocked out by chemical laced bread in B'Pur

Snip: At least 150 people were knocked unconscious after eating bread laced with anti-rodent medicine at a religious gathering on Saturday. The victims were given baked bread at the home of a landlord in Chak No 65. The wheat from which the bread was made, it was found, had been accidentally dosed with anti-rodent medicine.

Chemical plant vandalized AGAIN

SNIP: Unitex Chemical Corporation owner George Page tells FOX8 News he has lost count of how many times his storage area has been broken into. Monday, Page said a maintenance worker noticed on Monday someone cut the lock on a gate and replaced it with a new one. The new lock was one of the few things left behind.

Taken were three chemical storage containers. Each is reportedly worth about $15,000 and weighs more than 3,000 pounds. “These are people that knew what they wanted they knew what they were stealing and they chose the best products we have here,” said Page.

The thieves stole heavy equipment, cut away some equipment and removed motors from their mounts. Because Unitex is across the street from Interstate 40, Page said his equipment is probably in another state by now. “These people were professional,” said Page, “they knew what they were doing.”

Chemical Terrorism: How prepared are the clinical laboratories?

Snip: A survey of clinical laboratory professionals has found that less than half think their laboratory could effectively respond in a hazardous chemical emergency. Transportation silliness at airports

Snip: In November 2005 a TSA inspector ordered a woman passenger in line in front of me to remove her denim vest – which was also her blouse – at a checkpoint in St. Louis, Missouri. The woman had to pass through the TSA check point in her brassiere.

OPINION: Well now, it seems to me this company needs to put a 24/7 guard on their storage area.

OPINION: Actually a vest can conceal items and also, items can be sewn into the vest. Then of course there are bomb bras. None of this is silly -- it can be deadly.

HOWEVER...

The woman should have been taken to a side room (since according to the article her vest was her blouse) and inspected by a female inspector.

If there was a question regarding the vest; the inspector could have carried it through the screening machine and once cleared, take it back to the lady to put on again.

Just a few of my thoughts.

"Security forces 'foil terror plot every six weeks' (UK)"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Twice as many Islamist terror plots have been disrupted since the July 7 suicide bombings as has previously been made public, Britain's security services insist.

A further six plots, which have been kept secret until now for security reasons, had been planned by groups across Britain since the London Underground and bus bombings in 2005.

Whitehall sources refused to provide precise details on security grounds.

The revelation demonstrates the scale of the task facing MI5 and the police, who are now discovering or disrupting some kind of terrorist plot in the United Kingdom every six weeks. Up to 12 plots of all kinds have been discovered in the past year and a half.

Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller, the director-general of MI5, revealed last November that there were an estimated 1,600 suspected terrorist involved in at least 200 networks in Britain. It is understood that details of the previously undisclosed plots have been kept secret because no arrests were made and many of those involved assumed that their plans had "ground to a halt" for "natural reasons", such as a failure to acquire specific material. A Whitehall source said: "It has always been the case that much of MI5's work is never made public and this is an example of that."

Details of the plots emerged just days after MI5 and anti-terrorist detectives from the West Midlands Police foiled an alleged plan to kidnap a British soldier.

Nine suspects were arrested in the Birmingham area after a joint operation involving police and MI5 officers that brought a six-month investigation to its climax. Some of those arrested are alleged to have been planning to abduct and behead a young British Muslim soldier recently returned from Afghanistan. It is also alleged that his would-be murderers planned to post a video recording of his death on the internet.

Police said 18 addresses had been raided during Operation Gamble, the investigation into the alleged abduction plot, and that a "significant quantity" of exhibits had been taken away for examination.

Detectives are continuing to question the nine men arrested. Eight of the suspects were picked up in a series of dawn raids on Wednesday; the ninth was stopped on a motorway in the city several hours later. The nine suspects, eight British men of Pakistani descent and one Pakistani, have been detained on suspicion of the commission, instigation or preparation of acts of terrorism."

Afghan ‘US spy’ killed in North Waziristan

MIRANSHAH: A beheaded body was found in North Waziristan with a note saying he was “spying for the US”, political administration said Friday.

The murder came a day after three government officials were gunned down near Miranshah, the regional headquarters of North Waziristan. The note identified the alleged spy as Ghafoor, resident of Tanai village in Khost province of Afghanistan, the administration told Daily Times.

It said that the decapitated body was found in a ditch beside a road near Ghulam Khan, a border village in the west of Miranshah. “Those who spy for America will meet this fate,” the note in Pushto language read. It did not mention who beheaded him.

Kyrgyz authorities arrest militant linked to Al Qaeda

BISHKEK: Kyrgyz authorities have arrested an alleged member of a regional militant Islamic group linked to Al Qaeda, prompting a protest by his supporters, the Interior Ministry said Friday.

Atabek Abdumomunov, 32, a suspected member of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan who was wanted by the neighbouring country’s authorities since 2001 for his alleged involvement in bombings, was arrested in his home town of Uzgen by Kyrgyz security officers on Thursday, the ministry’s press office said.

Officers also seized a sawn-off rifle, a handmade pistol, bullets and CDs, video and audio tapes with religious content in Arabic at his home, the Ministry said.

About 20 of the suspect’s relatives and supporters protested his arrest for several hours outside the regional administration building demanding his release, the Osh regional police department said. Kyrgyz news agencies reported Friday that the protest involved up to 100 participants and that they attempted to block the road linking Osh, the country’s second largest city, with the capital, Bishkek.

The IMU is blamed for several attempted border incursions into Uzbekistan through Kyrgyzstan in 1999-2001 and bombings in both countries and another ex-Soviet republic in Central Asia, Tajikistan.

Morocco jails eight for al-Qaeda ties

A Moroccan court on Friday jailed eight Islamists for up to 10 years for plotting attacks and belonging to the al Qaeda network, court officials and lawyers said.

The court in Sale, a twin city to Rabat, convicted Ben Moujane Mohamed for "belonging to al Qaeda and preparing terrorist attacks". Mohamed, who was captured in 2002 by the US military in Afghanistan and jailed at Guantanamo Bay prison, was handed over to Morocco early last year. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Friday, Sale court officials and lawyers said.

The court, in a separate case, condemned six Islamists to between one and 10 years for plotting attacks and attempting to get military training with al Qaeda-linked guerrillas in Algeria. Algerian authorities seized the six men early in 2006 before they joined the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) which led an insurgency in Algeria.

Last month, the GSPC adopted the name Al Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb, saying it had the approval of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden for the change.

Imam leads Democrats in prayer of conversion (Michigan)

With heads bowed reverently, Democrats were led in prayer yesterday by a Muslim imam who essentially asked Allah to assist in converting the party members to Islam, according to a scholar and author.

Robert Spencer, director of Jihad Watch and author of "The Truth about Muhammad," took note of the prayer given at the Democratic National Committee winter meeting by Husham Al-Husainy, imam of the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center, a shiite mosque in Dearborn, Mich.

According to a transcript of the prayer, which can be seen on a video clip provided by HotAir.com, the imam said:
In the name of God the most merciful, the most compassionate. We thank you, God, to bless us among your creations. We thank you, God, to make us as a great nation. We thank you God, to send us your messages through our father Abraham and Moses and Jesus and Muhammad. Through you, God, we unite. So guide us to the right path. The path of the people you bless, not the path of the people you doom. Help us God to liberate and fill this earth with justice and peace and love and equality. And help us to stop the war and violence, and oppression and occupation. Ameen.

Spencer, in a post on his Jihad Watch website, said he found it interesting to see the Muslim leader praying, "in veiled terms to be sure, for their conversion to Islam, and, oh yes, for the destruction of Israel ("And help us to stop the war and violence, and oppression and occupation").
