:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
How al-Qaida Fared in 2006
-Full Story-

In 2006, agents of al-Qaida, as well as those inspired by its ideology, continued their attacks. Violence in Iraq intensified, and Afghanistan saw its bloodiest year since 2001.

Despite worsening chaos on those fronts, counterterrorist forces arrested and killed high-profile terrorists and kept the West free from attack. But these actions don't appear to have weakened the appeal of al-Qaida's agenda. "Home-grown" militants around the world joined its jihad, as regional fighting heightened perceptions of a global war on Islam.

Here's an assessment of some of the most significant gains and losses for al-Qaida last year: Read more..

"Internet backbone at center of suspected attack"
By Joris Evers
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
Published: February 6, 2007, 5:53 PM PST

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "There are signs that hackers attacked key parts of the backbone of the Internet on Tuesday, but no damage seems to have been done, experts said.

The attack appears to have focused on the Domain Name System, which maps text-based domain names, such as "News.com," to the actual numeric IP addresses of servers connected to the Internet, and vice versa. Several key DNS servers saw traffic spike in the early morning on Tuesday, several experts said--a sign of an attack.

"It is an unusual large amount of traffic that is hitting DNS servers," said John Crain, chief technical officer at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which operates one of the main so-called root DNS servers. "We see large attacks on a regular basis, but this hit quite a few servers, so it was fairly large."

Yet the DNS servers were able to withstand the onslaught, Crain added."

China a worldwide military threat
The Orange County Register ^ | 2/06/2007 | Peter Navarro

If China shooting down one of its old satellites in a ballistic missile test isn't a shot heard round the world, it should be. The question every politician and consumer of cheap Chinese goods should be asking themselves is: Just what kind of military monster are we creating by supporting the Chinese economy?

"Rocket was ready to fire"
February 07, 2007 02:00pm

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "But AFP Commissioner Mick Keelty said today that the rocket had been forensically examined by experts and found to be active.

"It was able to be used, yes," Mr Keelty told reporters in Canberra today.

"We continue to examine the rocket launcher that has been seized, we have identified its origins, we have been able to identify a batch number, having moved the rocket launcher to another part of Australia where it's been totally dismantled."

He said a "major search exercise" conducted during the past six weeks in an undisclosed location had failed to find the missing six rockets.

"What we do know is there is at least six other rocket launchers missing and we are working with defence trying to locate where those other rocket launchers are," Mr Keelty said."

"Leader of missionary couple abductors confirmed dead"

By Noel Tarrazona
Special to ASSIST News Service

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "ZAMBOANGA CITY, PHILIPPINES (ANS) -- Kaddafy Janjalani, the leader of the Abu Sayyaf Group who abducted American missionary couple Martin and Gracia Burnham in 2001, was confirmed dead by Philippine and U.S. authorities who conducted forensic examination two weeks ago.

Janjalani was killed in a gun battle with Philippine soldiers in the jungles of Patikul, Sulu which both U.S. and Philippine governments described a successful campaign against global terrorism.

The Burnhams were abducted at Dos Palmas in Puerto Princesa City in May 27, 2001 and were held captive for more than a year. Gracia was rescued by Philippine soldiers while her husband Martin was killed in the rescue operations. The couple was working for New Tribes Mission.

Two things could happen after the Abu Sayyaf top leader Kaddafy Janjalani was killed in a 30-minute gun battle in the jungles of Patikul, Sulu. Either it will finally end the 15-year terror activities in Southern Philippines or the group will even be stronger to take vengeance against Philippine and U.S. governments whose joint efforts were responsible for the death of their leader, who had a 5 million dollar reward on his head.

These possibilities are now under study by both RP and U.S. authorities as part of their global campaign against terror. Military intelligence reports disclosed that the Abu Sayyaf is now working as to who will succeed Janjalani and the following names were already considered as possible successor Radullan Sahiron, a one armed fighter who is already in his 70s, Abu Pula, the group’s strategist who is in his 50s, and Isnilon Hapilon, who was responsible in the kidnapping of three Americans and 17 Filipino tourists in Palawan resort in 2001.

However, Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Hermogenes Esperon said that the Abu Sayyaf will have a hard time looking for a leader as strong as Janjalani since there is no viable leader that could provide the same kind of Janjalani’s leadership.

Moreover, the US government upon learning the death of Janjalani, lauded President Gloria Arroyo’s administration in her support to US campaign against global terrorism. The U.S. military support also has been instrumental in neutralizing the Abu Sayyaf."

"'Al-Qaeda' arrests in Afghanistan"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A coalition military statement said that the operation on Wednesday morning was conducted "based on information provided about an al-Qaeda member known to pass correspondence for al-Qaeda senior leaders".

National Intelligence Director John Negroponte recently said al-Qaeda was strengthening its ties across the Middle East, North Africa and Europe from a secure hideout in Pakistan. Pakistan rejected the comments."

England - Bomb Explodes At DVLA (Third mail bomb in 3 days)
Sky News ^ | February 7, 2007

Posted on 02/07/2007 2:32:57 AM PST by HAL9000

A woman has been injured after a parcel bomb exploded at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency centre in Swansea, the third such attack in three days.
The latest blast happened in the post room of the DVLA.

The victim is said to have non life-threatening injuries.

Yesterday two people were hurt when a package exploded in Wokingham, Berkshire, at the offices of an accountancy firm linked to Speed Check Services, the provider of digital speed cameras to the police.

That followed a letter bomb attack the day before at the central London offices of Capita, which runs London's congestion charge system.

The latest attack appears to confirm fears that an enraged motorist is mounting a daily letter bomb campaign.

More follows...

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Wed Feb 07 2007 03:02:38 GMT-0800.

KENYA

February 06, 2007

This Travel Warning is being issued to remind American citizens to consider carefully the risks of travel to Kenya at this time due to ongoing safety and security concerns. This supersedes the Travel Warning of August 10, 2006.

The Department continues to recommend that private American citizens in Kenya evaluate their personal security situation in light of continuing terrorist threats and increasing incidents of violent crime. Terrorist acts may include suicide operations, bombings, attacks on civil aviation, and attacks on maritime vessels in or near Kenyan ports. Violent criminal attacks, including armed carjacking and home invasions/burglary, can occur at any time and in any location, and are becoming increasingly frequent, brazen, vicious, and often fatal. In January 2007, two family members of a U.S. Embassy employee were killed by armed carjackers. Kenyan authorities have limited capacity to deter and investigate such acts.

U.S. citizens should be aware of the risk of indiscriminate and random attacks on civilian targets in public places, including tourist sites and locations where foreigners are known to congregate, as well as commercial operations associated with U.S. or other foreign interests.

American citizens in Kenya should remain vigilant, particularly in public places frequented by foreigners such as clubs, hotels, resorts, upscale shopping centers, restaurants, and places of worship. Americans should also remain vigilant in residential areas, schools, and at outdoor recreational events, and should avoid demonstrations and large crowds.

Americans who travel to or reside in Kenya despite this Travel Warning are encouraged to register through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. The U.S. Embassy is located on United Nations Avenue, Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya; telephone (254) (20) 363-6000; fax (254) (20) 363-6410. In the event of an after-hours emergency, the Embassy duty officer may be contacted at (254) (20) 363-6170. The Embassy home page is http://kenya.usembassy.gov.

Updated information on travel and security in Kenya may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States, or for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. For further information please consult the Consular Information Sheet for Kenya, the East Africa Public Announcement, and the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, which are available on the Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet website at http://travel.state.gov.
