:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
How al-Qaida Fared in 2006
-Full Story-

In 2006, agents of al-Qaida, as well as those inspired by its ideology, continued their attacks. Violence in Iraq intensified, and Afghanistan saw its bloodiest year since 2001.

Despite worsening chaos on those fronts, counterterrorist forces arrested and killed high-profile terrorists and kept the West free from attack. But these actions don't appear to have weakened the appeal of al-Qaida's agenda. "Home-grown" militants around the world joined its jihad, as regional fighting heightened perceptions of a global war on Islam.

Here's an assessment of some of the most significant gains and losses for al-Qaida last year: Read more..

From your Jihadi terrorists in Europe article you pointed to:

"Internet plays an important role as a link between some individuals or groups."

Yes, that is true.

I still think it's something that should be found by the baggage screeners.

Absolutely! And they should identify and find the owner.

February 10, 2007

Catalonia emerging as continental European base of Pakistani jihad groups
Eurabia Alert. "Catalunya es la base europea de una filial paquistaní de Al Qaeda," by Antonio Baquero and Jordi Curachan for El Periódico (my translation):

Spain, and especially Catalonia, has been converted into the principal base of Jaish-e-Mohammed (the Army of Mohammed) in continental Europe, a Pakistani terrorist group tied to the central command of Al Qaeda and implicated in the July 7, 2005 attacks in London.
Sources from the Pakistani security forces alerted this paper that JEM "has recruited Pakistanis residing in Spain, and have sent them to Pakistan, where they have put them at the disposal of the networks of Al Qaeda in the tribal zones," in an itinerary tracing the route which Shehzad Tanweer and Mohammad Sidique Khan, the authors of July 7, took in November, 2004.
These sources emphasized the "collaboration" between the Spanish and Pakistani spy services, which allowed them to follow very closely the travels between Spain and Pakistan by various individuals.
The same sources said that, in Spain, JEM uses "mosques to recruit and mobilize volunteers for jihad, as they do in Great Britain as well." The Pakistani officials indicated that JEM uses Spain, and especially the Catalonian territory, as a logistical base. "In Catalonia, its members raise funds and send stolen European passports to Pakistan," they advised.
[...]
JEM is not the only Pakistani group that has penetrated Spanish territory. The sources from the Pakistani security forces indicate that another group, Lashkar e Toiba (LET, the Army of the Pure), a movement responsible for numerous attacks in India, has succeeded in implanting itself in Spain, where it is essentially dedicated to raising funds."

Thank each of you for your well wishes. Hubby is now sick and down for the count. He has a virus completely unlike the one I am still recovering from. Tis the season I reckon.

Militant Islamic groups turn to YouTube

Snip: Jeremy Curtin, a U.S. State Department official responsible for monitoring Internet propaganda, said authorities were aware of the footage on sites like YouTube but had not made any real headway in tackling the problem.

TB diagnosed in Portales (TX) milk firm employee

Snip: The state Department of Health contacted DairiConcepts about the employee, company spokeswoman Monica Coleman said Thursday. The company informed its other workers and offered them tests for the contagious disease. DairiConcepts employs more than 100 people.

So far only one case has been confirmed. People who may have been in contact with the individual are still being tested.

Escambia inmates treated for TB (FLA)

Snip: Some Escambia County inmates were being treated for tuberculosis after another inmate tested positive for the disease, a spokesman for the sheriff's office said. Twenty-four inmates were tested in mid-January, and as many as eight tested positive, Sgt. Mike Ward said.

Case of bovine TB threatens entire herd in Colorado

Surprise TB tests violate rights

Snip: When I attended Purdue, nurses suddenly showing up to class with syringes for use on the students were not called "guest speakers." The times have changed at Purdue, for the worse.

I refer to the practice of deception used last week by a history professor who misled his students into believing that their academic offerings would be enhanced that day by a visiting speaker. Instead, seven nurses performed invasive medical procedures for TB on the captive audience after a single Purdue student was found to have active TB. Is this academic freedom or military-style medicine?

Potential TB cases rise - previous exposures found

Health officials now believe about 700 Purdue community members may have been exposed to tuberculosis.

Case of TB in Twin Cities school

Snip: Health leaders discovered the person was infectious after they learned of the case, and because of that, testing will be done on students and staff. That's good news to some parents.

Medical Director Marjorie Kirsch of the Leon County Health Department said Thursday that the student, whose name is being withheld for privacy reasons, has not attended school since the illness began last fall.

Wisconsin Health Official says TB not a risk

Snip: Chris Hovell said although the county has a confirmed TB case and two suspected cases, rumors of an epidemic are false, and people should not worry about contracting the disease. She said the three cases are not related and come from three different high-risk groups. “Rumors are flying about the immigrant population, and it’s just not true,” Hovell said. “TB occurs not just in immigrant populations but also among Americans who travel to other parts of the world. Our cases involve different risk groups.”

Possible TB case at Isabel Elementary (MS)

Snip: There may be an active tuberculosis case at another Jackson school. As of Wednesday afternoon, it had not been confirmed. According to the Jackson Public School District, on Tuesday evening a parent reported to the District that an Isable Elementary School student may have been diagnosed with the disease. Officials at Isable School, next to Jim Hill High School on Isable Street, sent letters home with students to inform parents of the concern.

TB testing complete

Snip: Health department officials are not releasing the results of t-b tests done at Blackburn Middle School in Jackson. Health officials returned to the school Tuesday to test students, faculty and staff for possible t-b exposure. Authorities told more than 170 parents and students earlier this month that the one student who tested positive for t-b had been removed from classes and is being treated. The child was at Blackburn last fall. About 550 other students may have been exposed. Friday, WLBT was told the health department will not release the results because they don't want to ostracize the school.

Killer TB could be spreading in Africa

Snip: More than a year after a virulent strain of tuberculosis killed 52 of 53 infected patients in a rural South African hospital, experts say the disease has most likely spread to neighboring countries, and some say urgent action is essential to halt its advance.
