:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
How al-Qaida Fared in 2006
-Full Story-

In 2006, agents of al-Qaida, as well as those inspired by its ideology, continued their attacks. Violence in Iraq intensified, and Afghanistan saw its bloodiest year since 2001.

Despite worsening chaos on those fronts, counterterrorist forces arrested and killed high-profile terrorists and kept the West free from attack. But these actions don't appear to have weakened the appeal of al-Qaida's agenda. "Home-grown" militants around the world joined its jihad, as regional fighting heightened perceptions of a global war on Islam.

Here's an assessment of some of the most significant gains and losses for al-Qaida last year: Read more..

ARAB BANK PAYS OUT BLOOD MONEY - Life Insurance for Palestinian Suicide Bombers
DER SPIEGEL ^ | February 09, 2007 | Christoph Schult, Britta Sandberg and Ansgar Mertin

Posted on 02/11/2007 5:08:39 PM PST by Atlantic Bridge

An important bank in the Arab world offers accounts paying a type of life insurance to the families of Palestinian suicide bombers. But now it could soon face a lawsuit from American lawyers representing the victims.

On the morning of the day before he planned to blow himself up, Bassam Takruri wore a freshly ironed shirt, a blazer and polished shoes. At 10 a.m., the student said goodbye to his father, who gave him ten shekels in pocket money. It was a beautiful Saturday in May in the Palestinian town of Hebron.

Everything seemed normal, at least for the rest of the family. The 18-year-old Bassam, a boy with dark, earnest eyes, was ambitious. He wanted to become an engineer. His father called him his best son. But he spent the last night of his life away from this family -- something many suicide bombers do so as not to lose their nerve at the last moment.

Mall evacuated after fumes sicken shoppers

It looks like the gas leak has been ruled out.
They are talking 'chemical irritant' or pepper spray.
'None of the conditions were considered life threatening.'

I'll post more if and when I find out more.

SPIN BOLDAK, Afghanistan, Feb 12 (Reuters) - At least 700 Taliban fighters have crossed from Pakistan into Afghanistan to destroy a key dam, a major source of electricity, a provincial governor said on Monday.
"We have got confirmed reports that they are Pakistani, Uzbek and Chechen nationals and have sneaked in," Helmand Governor Asadullah Wafa told Reuters by telephone.

The dam, Kajaki, has seen major fighting in recent weeks between the Taliban and NATO forces.

[Video: (English) Interview with Kim Jong-nam] "I See my Father once in a While"

Fuji TV, "(He) can go freely in and out of N. Korea"

[2007-02-12 14:53]

Kim Jong-nam doing interview with TV crews from Fuji TV of Japan in Beijing > screen capture of Fuji TV footage<

Fuji TV of Japan reported on Feb. 12 that they scored an interview with Kim Jong-nam who showed up in Beijing on his way to Pyongyang in time for attending Kim Jong-il's birthday on Feb. 16.

Kim Jong-nam showed up at a shopping center in Beijing downtown on Feb. 11, where he said, "I am seeing my father once in a while, and I have no problem going in and out of N. Korea."

When he turned up, he dressed casually, wearing dark-colored sweaters, jeans, a cap and sunglasses. Asked what his name, address, and occupation are, he just said, "No comments."

At first he tried to avoid the interview, giving a gesture of putting his index finger on his lips, but soon he started to answer reporters' question in a calm manner.

In a seven minute interview conducted in English, he said, "Since I studied in Europe, I could speak some English and French." As for 6-party talks (which were under way in Beijing at the time,) "I have no interest in them. They have nothing to do with me."

Asked if he visits Beijing frequently, he answered, "Of course." When somebody asked, "Do you come here for business?", he said, "Well, if you think it as business, it could be business. I sometimes spend a day or two here, and then head for a European or Asian country."

After his interview, He went away in a luxury car, which came to pick him up.

Kim Jong-nam departed from Macau carrying a passport under the name of 'Kim Chol' on the morning of Feb. 11, and arrived in Beijing on the afternoon of the same day. He was spotted by Japanese news crews waiting at the airport after being tipped off. However, he managed to lose them at the airport and at the entrance of the hotel he is staying.

At the airport, when a Japanese news reporter said, "Mr. Kim Jong-nam, please, can you speak Japanese?", he responded in Japanese, "I can't speak Japanese."

Fuji TV also filmed the footage of Kim Jong-nam talking over his cell phone in Korean before his departure in Macau.

No wonder I missed the article, it was from last year. That might have been part of that larger plot that was uncovered in '06.

It was and is important.

A bomb exploded at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) compound in the residential neighborhood of University Town, Peshawar, at 0415 AM local time on February 10, 2007. The bomb caused some damage at the compound, but no injuries or casualties were reported. There has been no claim of responsibility for this attack.

This was the second attack on a Non-Governmental Organization's (NGO) offices in the Northwest Frontier Province in one week. On Monday, February 5, 2007 at 10:25 PM local time a grenade was thrown over the compound wall of the Save the Children Federation NGO in Batgram, Pakistan, in the district of Mansehra, injuring two individuals.

Although no American citizens were injured or killed in either attack, the Peshawar Consulate reiterates its previous recommendations advising American citizens to avoid crowded market areas, bazaars, and/or public demonstrations. Consulate staff has been advised against visiting Peshawar's Old City and Saddar Bazaar areas, and security personnel have recommended that staff members restrict movements throughout the city, staying mainly in the University Town area.

The Embassy would like to remind the American citizen community of the need to stay alert, be aware of your surroundings, vary times and routes, reduce travel to minimum acceptable levels, act self-defensively at all times, and avoid all demonstration activity and areas where Westerners are known to congregate. We remind American citizens that threats, protests and demonstrations may occur throughout Pakistan without prior notice or warning.
