Troops Nab Two in Afghan Raid; Terrorists Killed in Convoy Attack

WASHINGTON, Feb. 7, 2007 – Coalition troops based in Afghanistan captured two suspected al Qaeda operatives during a morning raid in Nangarhar province today, military officials reported, while elsewhere in Afghanistan today a coalition convey blunted an insurgent attack, killing two terrorists.
The two suspected al Qaeda members were taken into custody during an early morning raid by coalition forces near the town of Hakimabad in Nangarhar province, officials said.
The raid was conducted based on a tip about an individual in Afghanistan who was known to pass information to senior al Qaeda leaders, officials said. The suspects are being held for questioning to determine the extent of their association with al Qaeda.
The insurgent attack on a coalition convoy occurred four kilometers north of the town of Mizan, in Zabul province. Insurgents attacked the convoy with small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades.
Convoy personnel engaged the attackers with small-arms fire, killing one enemy combatant and injuring another. Coalition medical personnel provided medical care to the injured enemy at the scene, but he died of his wounds before being evacuated to a treatment facility.
Three coalition personnel are being treated for non-life-threatening wounds suffered during the attack.
Additionally, Afghan National Police discovered an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Kunar province yesterday.
The police secured the site and called for a coalition forces’ explosive ordnance disposal team. The EOD team arrived and blew up the IED on site.
