Ben Stein on "The Lynching of the President"

The Lynching of the President By Ben Stein

So there I was, lying in my bed in Malibu with my dogs, watching Mr. Bush's State of the Union speech. I thought it was darned good. Realistic, gracious, modest, sensible. I happen to think we should get out of Iraq yesterday, but I thought Mr Bush put forward his case well. And Congress responded graciously and generously on both sides of the aisle.

Then, whaam, as soon as the speech was over, ABC was bashing him, telling us how pathetic he was, how irrelevant he was, how weak he was, how unrealistic he was.

Right after that, Jim Webb gave a very short speech biting Bush's head off -- but not making any concrete proposals about anything. No network person mentioned how simple minded and unrealistic he was.

Then, tonight, the next night, I walked into the kitchen where my wife had left the radio going with NPR to amuse the cats. NPR was having a call-in show talking about the State of the Union. The first speaker I heard was a country music legend, Merle Haggard, who said he had never seen things so bad in this country. Then a legion of anonymous callers chimed in with similar thoughts.

And suddenly it hit me. The media is staging a coup against Mr. Bush. They cannot impeach him because he hasn't done anything illegal. But they can endlessly tell us what a loser he is and how out of touch he is (and I mean ENDLESSLY) and how he's just a vestigial organ on the body politic right now.

ABC was bashing him, telling us how pathetic he was, how irrelevant he was, how weak he was, how unrealistic he was.

And this is compared to the traitors and defeatists democrats in Congress with few stupid Republicans who are so impotent and so weak that all what they can do to fight our President strategy for victory is to suggest a "non biding" defeatist resolution and even this one have very hard time of getting cloture and passing. Talk about impotent and weak, I present you with the US Congress.

The press is Cassandra when a republican president is in the White House, Voltaire's Candide when a democrat is in. It's enough to get one started thinking for oneself, but that only leads to voting third party. What to do, what to do?

Ben Stein has resurrected himself finally. Freepers have been saying along that Bush is lamb for the liberal slaughter. Ben Stein did put it well but alittle late.

Why are the Dem's allowed to formally criticize the President's State of the Union Address, while the Dem's rebuttal cannot be criticized????? It was not a rebuttal. It was a personal attack. Webb's address was nearly treasonous and no one said a thing.

He's correct. People aren't tired of the war, they're tired of what they are hearing about the war. They're tired of the media.

I'm a Virginian. Many of us have learned to just ignore our junior senator.

I gave up on NPR a long time ago -- Nina, Terry Gross, Garrison...

They are not voicing the public's interest, and it's not National Public Radio -- it's National Wacko Liberal Radio, subsidized by the taxpayer.

It's ugly and it's been ugly for a long time...

"Many of us have learned to just ignore our junior senator.

Already? Wow. But, please don't ignore him when it is time to elect his replacement. For heaven's sake, work against him ... don't ignore him.

I agree that Ben Stein is a national treasure but would partially disagree with him that the war is a huge mistake. I say partially because I belive it is too soon to make that assessment.

I love to read anything that Ben Stein has to say, however, his adamant belief that tax cuts are wrong just miffs me. For someone as economically astute as he is in most cases, his failure to recognize the benefits of tax cuts is mystifying.

Love him nonetheless.
