I think because Newt is a more polarizing figure eg Contract with America as far as the Independents are concerned and many conservatives/religious right will be iffy about him with 3 marriages. I know McCain has 2 but Newt's as some see it dirty washing is newer.

Newt can run for congress & may become speaker or majority leader. He always side with the power of congress & he advised Hastert that FBI search of Jafferson was wrong - that 's when started the downslide of house republicans.
Yesterday he again suggested to to republicans "distance" from & defy the WH during Study commitee meeting.
Someone suggested he would be a good professor. I agree. His appearance with Hillary ended his WH ambitions, imo.
