Romney targeting McCain
The State (South Carolina) ^ | Sun, Feb. 04, 2007 | LEE BANDY

Posted on 02/04/2007 7:25:32 PM PST by Plutarch

Mitt Romney’s assignment in the 2008 S.C. Republican presidential primary is simply this: Derail John McCain’s “Straight Talk Express.”

If there were any doubts about Romney’s mission, they were erased during the former Massachusetts governor’s two-day visit to the state last week.

Romney attracted large, enthusiastic crowds at stops in Charleston, Aiken and Columbia. It was a shot in the arm for his campaign.

Romney’s chief rival in South Carolina is McCain, the U.S. senator from Arizona who leads in the polls here and enjoys the backing of the state’s GOP establishment.

Romney isn’t impressed.

Endorsements never elected anybody, he says.

“A message is what people want to hear. When you decide who you want to vote for, you don’t say, ‘Gosh, I wonder what my city counselor is going to do...’“

______________[snip]____________

Then he pointed out his differences with McCain.

Romney noted his foe from Arizona wrote the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform law that restricts certain types of contributions.

“That’s a terrible piece of legislation,” Romney said. “It hasn’t taken the money out of politics. ... (But) it has hurt my party.”

Conservative Christians, who make up a third of the GOP primary vote, oppose McCain-Feingold.

But that’s not all.

McCain opposed President Bush’s tax cuts, Romney noted.

“I supported them,” the former governor said.

McCain believes the president’s interrogation of terrorist detainees was a violation of the Geneva Accords.

“I disagree with him,” Romney said.

Of the McCain-Kennedy immigration bill, Romney said, “I think it was a mistake.”

If I knew for certain that I could rely on Romney's judicial appointments being constitutional originalists, I would get behind him now.

Look up his Massachustetts judicial nominations, that will give a clue.

In the article, Romney states his opposition to McCain-Feingold, and the Senate Amnesty bill (both supported by Bush). Romney states his support for tax cuts and interrogation of terrorists. Which of these are the RINO positions?

Which of these are conservative positions?

Let's say romney gets elected with a democrat controlled congress. They send him a new, bigger assault weapons ban. Does he sign it?

Will you actually answer that question? No RINO fan has yet to actually answer it. They all dodge the question.

I don't think he would. It's one thing when your running in mass., it's another when you are running nationwide. He needed liberal votes in mass. He needs our votes to get and keep the presidency. It would be political suicide if he voted for it and he is not stupid. Also note Bush said he would sign the ban too.

Please use your "flash" cards a little more judiciously. They're beginning to look like spam on every thread. Thanks.

No, he wouldn't. Big difference trying to keep the libs at bay in MA and getting elected a Republican President running as a conservative. How come Romney gets so much grief over having the same position on the Brady Bill as Bush who said he would sign the extension while running for President as Governor of Texas, and again while he was in office?

Well you know one thing for sure -- McCain is NOT an originalist. Flat out.

I don't care about his looks at all. He is pro-abortion. Not someone I want as president.

You are right again, Onyx. Isn't that what all prolifers want to do? Change the hearts and minds of our fellow Americans? Yet, when they do change their minds and become prolife, we refuse to accept them. Strange indeed.

Op-ed written by Gov. Mitt Romney and published in the Boston Globe in July, 2005, titled "Why I vetoed contraception bill". An excerpt appears below:

"I understand that my views on laws governing abortion set me in the minority in our Commonwealth. I am prolife. I believe that abortion is the wrong choice except in cases of incest, rape, and to save the life of the mother.

I wish the people of America agreed, and that the laws of our nation could reflect that view. But while the nation remains so divided over abortion, I believe that the states, through the democratic process, should determine their own abortion laws and not have them dictated by judicial mandate."

He is sounding as good as he looks.

because bush actually signed a pro gun bill while he was governer.

Romney BANNED guns while he was governer.

And bush's pandering to the liberals wasn't any good then. Instead of taking on an issue and trying to do a little education, he went with the "guns are bad" schtick.

Romney has a track record of being a gun grabber. The same "he had to work with a liberal state" can be applied to "he has to work with a liberal congress."

You have three choices with romney. Either:

1. He really wants to ban "assault weapons" and pass gun control laws like he has said AND done.

2. He didn't want to ban assault weapons and pass gun control laws, but he lacks any courage to stand up for what he really believes in - AND he says the exact opposite of what he believes. (one way to interpret your explanation)

3. He doesn't really believe anything and will say and do whatever it takes to get elected.(another way to rectify your explanation with what he has said and done WRT the 2nd amendment.)

None of those three options will find him featured on "profiles in courage". None of them are characteristics I would be able to stand in myself. I wouldn't want to know anyone in my personal life who acted like that. And I certainly wouldn't want that person to be president and responsible for protection the constitution of the U.S.

FWIW, some posters just don't like him and will take pot shots at everything. Pathetic.

I don't know why you are so ignorant to the positions of the man.

Nothing anyone anywhere would ever shut you up unless you get banned.

You are the Cindy Sheehan of anti Romney threads. Why?

And don't try to prentend like its Romney's politics thats causing it.

Mitt may not be a perfect social conservative, but he is a great economic conservative. He is like a Steve Forbes with both business and elective office experience.

He also gets it about the War on Terror, McCain-Feingold and Immigration, stances that narrow the declared field down to himself and Duncan Hunter.

My personal preference is Hunter. But Romney would certainly be an acceptable choice. When Jim Demint, Ann Coulter and Michille Malkin thinks he deserves a look, I'm inclined to agree.
