Hi Ole Okie-
Thank you for the courteous and absolutely helpful response. Read further along this thread to observe how fast it went downhill with some FReepers posting insults and adding nothing to the dialogue. Thanks again for the background info on the photograph.

I like it. I can't wait to see what he can do with the 7 Dwarfs when the '08 field is set. For either side.

The picture is shown in
Dispatch 2 of the
"trip" link in the original post. It's basically a snapshot of a scene happened upon during their scientific expedition. The comment in the text reads,
Currently we are traveling towards the 150 deg. longitude line to the next CTD and mooring sights, but had to slow down to a crawl because of an interesting and exciting encounter; a polar bear was sighted swimming off of the ships port bow. It looked to be a juvenile, but is still considered to be very dangerous. Later on a mother and cub were also spotted on top of an extraordinary ice block.
So they don't seem to have been particularly concerned about them! Of course, there's no mention of how far they were from pack ice. As the original post indicates, the trip journal says that they found, in at least some instances, thicker ice than they expected ( in early August. ) They're in the Beaufort Sea, north of Prudhoe Bay, btw.
The excerpts in the original post are from Dispatch 8.
As to polar bears getting stranded, I would have to imagine that it would be a fairly common occurrence. A bear could easily be on a large floe which opens a wide channel with the main ice pack. I suppose it could wander there for weeks before it fragments and leaves it on a small piece.

I'm wondering how sincere these folks really were when the rally cry was "

I believe bears can swim maybe 100 miles. These guy were close enough for the guys digging in the ice to take a picture. Do you think the bears are out there cause the people are around.

Polar Bears are mighty good swimmers.
To: ApplegateRanch
But orcalopes do! Naw, thats only a rumor. I won't believe they exist unless I see some proof!
Also, I've heard that one sub species of salmon up in the far north grows antlers (or is it fur?...its getting late). Never seen any proof though.
Have you heard of the eagleopes? I think someone was trying to pull my leg, but he did sound very convincing!

All that I am asking is whether that is a real photograph or not. They also need something to drink aside from salt-filled seawater. I can swim, too, but that doesn't mean I could paddle forever without eventually drowning. My point is that if bears are seen far beyond where it could be rescued or helped to firm ground, the humane thing to do would be to shoot them so they don't die of starvation, thirst, or drowning due to physical exhaustion. Seriously - do you belong to the Sierra Club?
