Police: Doctor charged after waving gun at another driver
CHRISTINA KAUFFMAN The York Dispatch Article Last Updated: 02/05/2007 10:46:34 AM EST
A Shrewsbury Township physician had his gun permit seized, and he was charged with simple assault for allegedly brandishing his .357 magnum at a Maryland motorist on Interstate 83, police said.
State police said 22-year-old Lovar Belnavis of White Hall was driving south on I-83, near the Shrewsbury exit, about 9:30 Friday morning. He illegally stayed in the left lane, the passing lane, though he was not passing any vehicle in the right lane, police said.
Police said Dr. David Michael Yakacki, 55, of 623 E. Tolna Road, was driving behind Belnavis in the left lane. He approached the rear of Belnavis' vehicle and attempted to have him move into the right lane by flash- ing his lights and beeping his horn.
Belnavis remained in the left lane. Yakacki then pulled into the right lane next to him and allegedly pulled out the Smith & Wesson handgun and pointed it at Belnavis, police said.
Belnavis allowed Yakacki to go by him, then followed Yakacki to his house.
When state police Trooper Thomas Pinkerton arrived at his house, Yakacki said he knew why the trooper was there and provided a statement, police said.
The trooper took the loaded gun from inside Yakacki's 1998 Volvo and seized his license to carry a firearm.
When reached by phone Friday afternoon at his Shrewsbury practice, Yakacki refused to comment until he spoke with an attorney. He could not be reached for comment this morning.

On the other hand, drivers who stay in the left lane for no reason, and refuse to move over for faster drivers deserve to be shot.
LOL...re your tagline...
Sorry, medical degree or not there is no absolute right to drive as fast as you can go. In the area where this happened there is a very short, blind entrance ramp where everyone is safer if the through traffic keeps left.
Bet it will be cited over and over ad-nausum...
Yes, doctors can act like morons, too.
How often I wish I had an M1A1, for idiots in the left hand lane, doing 55 when the speed limit is 65, and there is 1/2 mile ahead of them to the next car, and semis in the 2 right hand lanes.
Pulled his gun license? They should have pulled his medical license? Sheesh! What was he thinking?
Too bad he didn't moon that guy instead of brandishing his gun. Now he's been installed in the Brady Bunch pantheon of miscreants. Anytime they need an example of their OK Corral analogy, they'll point to him.
I've always dreamed of a very very large laser, technical problems aside. No evidence remains. Of course it would be much more fun to beam them into the nearest cesspool.
Some people are just too stupid to be let out of the house.
Agreed that the guy messed up bad. I have a CWP and have never felt the need to brandish my weapon. I have, however, considered brandishing my CWP.
If he could pull alongside the guy he could pass him. The Doctor's an idiot with a huge sense of entitlement.
I agree the doctor was dead wrong. But lets look at the idiot that wouldnt move over.
1. He should have just moved over. Situation solved.
2. How smart can you be when you follow a person home who brandished a gun at you. Wouldnt a tag number and a cell phone call have been good enough? and then sort of back away?
There wasnt an overdose of brain power working in either of these folks. If this had been Rt. 295 in DC and he had followed a person with a gun home to Anacostia he would be the individual in the coffin at the Lee Funeral Home.
I don't know if it is still the law but it used to be that when passing, the passer had 6 miles to pass the passee so dummies get away with staying in the left lane.
There is no doubt that Lovar Belnavis is not too bright, either. He followed Dr. David Michael Yakacki home after the doctor pointed a .357 at him.
Agreed, but we all know that our fellow motorists are not always paragons of reason and deportment.

Hey, I don't follow folks who didn't brandish guns at me.

I'd show up for the funeral if Martin's on the Pike was catering the wake!
Good bumper-sticker, huh?
Whetever happened to passing him on the right and flipping him the bird?
This doc is probably one of those morons who passes you like you're standing still when you're cruising the limit, or races up to within three feet of your bumper when you are passing at 70 in a 65 zone.
