CA: Turmoil In The Republican Party Over Money, Ideology (and debt debt debt..)
LA Times | 2/5/07 | Robert Salladay

Posted on 02/05/2007 4:37:24 PM PST by NormsRevenge

After Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's landslide reelection last year, the California Republican Party is left fighting over millions of dollars of debt, unable to pay the salaries of county executive directors or cash bounties to workers registering new GOP voters.

As Republicans prepare for their weekend convention, the dispute has descended into "accusatory and obnoxious" exchanges over politics, finances and the direction of the party, according to e-mails obtained by Political Muscle.

Schwarzenegger's campaign is planning two spring fundraisers to get the GOP solvent again. The party is about $4.6 million in debt. ...

The dispute represents a larger fight within the party over ideology and direction. Some conservative Republicans have grumbled loudly about last year's $20 million get-out-the-vote campaign, which left only Schwarzenegger and Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner as the GOP winners. Both are considered moderates, while conservative candidates such as Sen. Tom McClintock lost.

Many see Schwarzenegger as a political heretic leading the party down a dangerous path that ignores conservatism in favor of compromise with liberals.

All of this has left Schwarzenegger's advisors a little astonished at the conservative wing of the California Republican Party and their "clueless" expectations, as one put it.

-snip-

Specifically, there is grumbling among conservatives about efforts to register new Republican voters. Shawn Steel, the conservative former Republican Party chairman, is complaining about the GOP voter registration effort orchestrated by Schwarzenegger. Last year, the party paid workers a $13 hourly wage to register voters instead of a $3 bounty for each new party member. ..

"The program delivered a total of 125,469 GOP registrations. At a cost of only $16.74 each. .. Sadly, the CRP verifying the 'new' registrations ... discovered an 'error' rate of 33.33 %. Ouch. .. CRP officials are still wondering if they were trapped in a bad dream.' "

Whatever complaints one (justly!) may have about the overspending accomplished by the erstwhile GOP Congress and Bush,

it pales in comparison to what Arnold has managed in three short years. The damage he has done will take decades to un-do, and may never be undone; instead, the state may be doomed to be one like Hawaii: very beautiful, but dependent on tourism, retirees and a relatively few super-rich (who are willing to get soaked). Middle and upper-middle-class jobs? The sort of state in which you'd start a business, or into which you'd move your business? As Borat would say, "Not so much."

What were CA repubs expecting when they rallied behind Gov. Kennedy-in-law?

I can tell you EXACTLY what we were expecting ... to avoid a Cruz "La Mecha" Bustamante governorship. Cruz belonged to groups advocating Mexico taking over the SouthWest.

Yeah, Arnold is disappointing. But we dodged a bullet.

Good point about Bustamante. I can't even imagine how tough it must be to live in CA when your best case political scenario is Arnold.

Brilliant and astute analysis. Not like so much of the anal and shallow analysis that keeps popping up occasionally on these threads!!!

"Shawn Steel, the conservative former Republican Party chairman"

Just so nobody forgets the true facts... Shawn and Melanie Morgan launched the historic CA Recall on KSFO during the morning news-talk program.

Grassroots conservatives worked extremely hard to correct the mistake of letting Gray Davis continue in office until smarty pants Schwartzenegger, with coaching from Pete Wilson, jumped up on the Jay Leno show and swiped the whole effort from grassroots conservatives and one multi-millionaire who committed heavily to the effort!!!

This coaching was by the very same Pete Wilson whose wife got a rich seat on the board of ARCO just as Pete left the Governor's office himself. ARCO, you may remember is the company that profitted mightily from the inclusion of MTBE in CA's gasoline that contaminated the water supplies of many CA cities, including the gem of the pacific rim... South Lake Tahoe were several of it's wells had to be taken out of service!!!

Schwarzenegger: I couldn't have done it without you, Duf.

Sundheim: Yeah... the clueless suckers!

"I can tell you EXACTLY what we were expecting ... to avoid a Cruz "La Mecha" Bustamante governorship." That over-blown fearmongering fairytale was just a ruse put out by Pete Wilson and the Wilsonegger campaign hacks here on FR to provide cover for the extreme environmental whacko stuff that Schwartzie was promising right on his campaign website as reported repeatedly here on FR!!! (the swooners just wouldn't listen, however)

But that's alright, I'm sure you'll enjoy using that old fright to continue to cover for Schwartzy's continual stifling of the well established Republican platform that he's gleefully keeping in his stupid cigar box!!! (see? Bill Clinton wasn't the only one for abusing cigars!)

The same posters are using the same tactics to sell Giuliani as a good GOP nominee for President.

Conservatism is not the objective.

It's hell here in Mexifornia, but I believe the tide is beginning to turn. The illegals are going to put up one hell of a fight before they go.
