Iran test fires Russian missiles near Strait of Hormuz The Associated PressPublished: February 7, 2007
TEHRAN, Iran: Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards test fired its new Russian defense missile system Wednesday near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, state radio reported.
The two-day maneuvers are Iran's second since the United Nations Security Council approved economic sanctions against it Dec. 23, which ban selling to Iran materials and technology that it could use in its nuclear and missile programs.
As tensions rise over Iran's nuclear standoff with the West, the United States and Iran have pursued an escalating series of military moves, with Washington sending a second aircraft carrier battle group to the region and Iran responding with more frequent maneuvers.
The Revolutionary Guards' began the games Wednesday in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, which flank the strait, through which some 20 percent of the world's oil transits daily.

One less missile they can use against us. Please test some more.
The system in question is a relatively short range (effective to maybe 10 miles and 20,000 ft) anti-aircraft system. It is worriesome for attack aircraft but would be targeted by Wild-Weasel, ant-radiation missiles from our own attack aircraft if it came to a fight.
Just a question...If war is considered so bad by the MSM and reporters in general, why do they call them War "Games"? I know the military uses the War Games phrase, but you wouldn't think the MSM would make war out to be anything remotely resembling a game.
ROFL!
I'm assuming that WWI was a typo cause I don't think they could have carpet bombed a... well, carpet, with WWI technology.
a German copy of a Russian design had pretty good success used in 3 ship
formations....The concept was there... It's just that they couldn't put together the Monster
formations we have become used to seeing in WWII
He intoned, "There they go with their thruster burners...(a Star Wars frentic phrase) lit!
That's pretty good!
We should shoot one down and blame the Chinese.
SA-15s are sophisticated enough to take out HARMs. The SA-15 can also operate without the need for radar emissions. It has optical guidance mode.
My read is that it is primarly an anti-aircraft system, not an anti-missile system. It would have to be much more sophisticated to take out a missile the size and speed of the HARM, particularly within its engagement environment.
These missiles are purely defensive and not a threat to anyone, just like the weapons Russia sells Syria are no threat at all to Israel, and the enriched Uranium the Russians are selling Iran is only for peaceful purposes.
Do you guys remember The Far Side cartoon used to occasionally reference the Straits of Hormuz? Whenever I read that I always think of that.

Russian news source: Iran successfully tests Russian TOR-M1 missiles
The Tor-1M has been constantly refined. Check out videos of the speed and agility of the missile launches. A propertly set up system will have the capabilty and probability of hitting LGBs, Glide-bombs and anti-radiation weapons such as ALARM and HARM. That aside there is a probability threshold. Imagine a Tor-1M battery having a barrage of anti-radiation missiles fired against it? Throw in a few decoy glide weapons and you would saturate the system.
That isn't a picture of Tor-1 (SA-15 Gauntlet). The Tor-1 is a small system with the missiles contained in vertical launch tubes. The picture you have posted is of the SA-11 Gadfly. Just Google SA-15 for images of the system.
