KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A series of explosions has rocked the east bottoms area of Kansas City.
The explosion happened just after 2 p.m. in the area of Nicholson Avenue and Gardner. Firefighters are on scene at the Chem Central with hazardous materials crews.

Emergency crews have evacuated the area. Some residents and business in the area have experienced short power disruptions.

A spokesman with Chem Central, based in Chicago, says there were no injuries, but would not speculate on what caused the fire. Chem Central is a repackaging and sales plant of chemicals used in adhesives, paints and sealants.
Kansas City Fire Marshal Floyd Peoples was unsure exactly what company's plant had caught fire and did not know what chemical it produced. But he said all safety precautions were being taken.
The area had not yet been evacuated and Peoples was not sure if that would be necessary.

It's an industrial area with railroad tracks, etc.
Some of the Interstates are shut down, just as a precaution right now. The police are wearing gas masks because of the chemicals. Evacuations of businesses in a 4 block area.
My husband works downtown and the smoke is over his building.

OT is fine, I'm sure, 'cause she works in Johnson County. OB can see the smoke plume from his office building, and I have asked him to stay inside.
It is of concern that 'something" is precipatating out of the clouds and it is moving towards JoCo. Winds are out of the north and east, so the plume is moving south and west. LSA

We had some minor power issues here at my workplace downtown, and the smoke is all over the place.
One of my co-workers has a son who is in the KCK fire department and according to him there are no fatalities so far .

I could "taste" something in the air before I was ever told it was a chemical plant explosion, but no one else seems to have made the same observation. Right now I feel safer in here than I would our driving around in my car constantly pulling in fresh air.
However my coworker just asked me "uh, are you ready to go"? :-)
I haven't heard of any fatalities either. I just heard the latest concern is what chemical will fall out of the cloud as it cools.
The live coverage is brutal. Not the coverage itself but the fire. What a mess!

Are you watching the live coverage? Thick, black smoke. Looks like a tornado of fire. The pictures from the distance are eerie.
Anyone nearby, stay safe. Don't venture out.
