Prize-Winning Wedding Photo of Wounded Marine
World Press Photo ^ | 2/10/07 | Nina Berman

At the request of the artist, I haven't copied the photo in question to this thread. It's viewable here.

The photo took first prize in the portrait category of the World Press Photo awards. It is such a beautiful example of love, determination, and strength mixed with sadness and wistfulness that I was very moved the first time that I looked at it.

Oh my. Life will be so hard. G-d bless this marriage and thank G-d for men like this groom and their sacrifices.

Well, the bride has a "is this how it's going to be for the next forty years?" forty yard stare.

I noticed that. My heart aches.

God bless this young couple and all of our brave fighting men. I don't know the story of this particular young man, but I'll bet he has fought hard to overcome many obstacles to his recovery.

Old story. Why are we doing it again?

This brave Marine will undoubtedly undergo reconstructive surgery. May the Lord guide the hands of his surgeons. Miracles are performed by reconstruction today.

However, at the moment, surgery or not, the noble heart of this American warrior transcends any outward appearance.

Thanks for this beautiful love story about a beautiful couple. Valentine red roses and best wishes to them from this admiring freeper.

I hadn't seen this story before. It's inspiring and makes each of us a little prouder and happier. That's why I'm delighted this "old story" is being "done again."

Shame on you. You are sour.

Leni,
Just because you are not on FR as much as others and have seen this story before does not make a person sour. Perhaps you need to read FR more and you will be happier.

Actually, I think it was either the British Hurricane, Spitfire or both that had a fuel tank directly in front of the instrument panel. A tracer round through produced predictably terrifying results.

Many pilots were horribly burnt and grotesquely disfigured but in the eye's of British women, they were heroes and very much in demand as husbands.

"Leni, just because you're not on FR as much as others and have seen this story before does not make a person sour. Perhaps you need to read FR more and you will be happier".

Mr. Nap, please note I stated in my post above that I HADN'T seen this story before. I was happy it was on again for those of us, including me, who didn't know about this delightful event for the Marine and his bride.

Yes, you ARE sour for complaining that the story was "old" and for whining that it was re-posted. You could have just been quiet and let the rest of us enjoy some upbeat news for a change.

You (who signed on in the latter part of 2005) don't think I'm on FR "as much as others" and that I "need to read it more and I'll be happier".

Actually, I'm a 1998 signer-onner, served on the Free Republic Network Board of Directors, currently serving as a member of the FR quarterly fund-raising committee....and am also known on this forum as "Friva Diva" (Las Vegas FR Conference publicity committee chair), and also "Bahama Mama", organizer of all the "FReeps Ahoy" fund-raising cruises.

Likewise, I chaired the committee that re-organized the Florida chapter into three manageable and efficient chapters, not an easy or quick job.

So I'm "not on FR as much as others"? LOL.

If I was on FR any more during all these years, my eyes would be hanging out my head. In fact, they ARE! I just don't have an extra pair of eyes to look down to see how far they're hanging.

So you say I "don't read FR as much as others and if I did, I'd be happier"?

Let me say that reading FR makes me happier every day and will continue to make me happier in the future.

One of the things that makes me happy is to post a comment every once in a while to the numerically-few posters who are sour pusses, picky-picky complainers, self-appointed editors.....and thread party-poopers.

Bless our Marines. IMO, their inspirational stories can be twice-told on this board any time.

Leni
