Romney affirms abortion opposition during stop in SC

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney sought to dispel doubts about his opposition to abortion during a visit Friday with Republicans in the heart of South Carolina's Christian conservative territory

"I am firmly pro-life," the former Massachusetts governor told about 100 Republicans at a restaurant here, with his wife, Ann, by his side. "I was always for life."

When pressed about his shift from supporting abortion rights, Romney said he knew he could do nothing to change the law while governor. "Every act I've taken as governor has been in favor of life," he said.

Romney has said he once supported abortion rights because a relative died in a botched abortion. The view changed more than two years ago after he took a hard look at the destruction of embryos used for stem cell research -- something that "cheapened the value of human life," he has said.

This is a tough call. A lot of people have had sincere changes of heart over the years, which is why support for abortion is no longer a political asset.

Which I'm assuming is a load of horsecrap, but that only makes him like every other politician whose lips are moving.

hopefully that quote is germane enough to the discussion. But I suspect the romney fans will complain anyway.

Let's see:

Running for office in liberal MA: Staunchly pro roe v wade.

No longer running for office in MA and has to appeal to a conservative base: Staunchly pro-life

Is there something in the water in MA that makes presidential wannabes flip flop like crazy?

their personal opinions are all well and good - the issue is constitutionalist judges, that's it. and before anyone posts back to me that pro-choice republicans never support constitutionalist judges - take a look at the vote on Alito.

I think some of his past statements on guns will come back to bite him also.

Very good point.

Which also shows the need to retake the U.S. Senate in 2008.

One of my favorite political collectibles is a cd about Al Gore's greatest flip-flops. Then we had a greater flip-flopper in Kerry. Why oh why would Republicans now pick a flip-flopper for themselves. D'rats won't even have to look for ammo. They can just borrow our old stuff.

It's amazing how conservative a liberal can get when he's decided to run for the Republican nomination for President. Disagree with the man? No problem -- wait ten minutes.

As a Reagan conservative, I'm warming to Mitt. I loved how he removed state assets to protect the iman who visited/lectured at harvard while he was governor.

In the prez debates, I can see mccain and Guiliani both making nice-nice to the hildebeast. BUT, I can see Romney standing up to the beast and correcting the lies that will come out of her evil mouth.

I know his problems there also. He grew up in my state of Michigan and I have searched his records.

Of the "top 3" ( gag) Romney is the only one with any chance at all in this state, as slight as it would be.

Is there something in the water in MA

Did you really mean to say it that way noting the history of Ted & MaryJo?

As to this point, another politico he can be compared to is Al Gore. Like Gore, Romney has flip-flopped on abortion, only in the other direction. While he now claims to be pro-life, he supported legalization of the “morning-after” abortion pill, RU-486. Moreover, as recently as his 2002 run for governor his platform stated,

“The choice to have an abortion is a deeply personal one. Women should be free to choose based on their own beliefs, not the government’s.”

Of course, Romney says that his views have “evolved.” But I strongly suspect his adaptation relates more to the evolution of political ambitions than that of conscience. Call me cynical, but unless you’ve been cloistered in an ancient monastery for the duration, I’m very suspicious of deep personal growth occurring between ages 55 and 59. By Selwyn Duke The Conservative Voice

You just can't get enough Rino's, can you? First Rudy and now Romney.

I'm just pointing out the choices. I haven't committed to any candidate.

I wish that Fred Thompson would run.

Romney supported the morning after pill, "Plan B," which prevents egg implantation (pregnancy). Plan B has no affect if taken after implantation.

RU-486, on the other hand, is an abortifacient which induces abortion weeks after implantation.

This is an important distinction.
