Country singer Toby Keith inadvertently summed up the attitude of an entire generation with the lyrics to “I Wanna Talk About Me”. Keith laments:

I wanna talk about me Wanna talk about I Wanna talk about number one Old my me my….

I have watched with amazement the egocentric attitudes, as well as the half-hearted actions, of too many Americans of a certain generation toward supporting the war on terror and also championing our troops.

I think he was talking about dating women who think that they are the most intersting topic of conversation and will remain centered on that subject regardless of anyone else present.

Misterrob is right, this song has nothing to do with TK's view of the war, and is so far off the mark as to completely degrade the author's point. TK has been a huge supporter of the troops and the war effort. A better song to represent his view is "Courtesy of the Red White and Blue."

That is the song that made Natalie Maines wear her FUTK t-shirt.

[The liberals] blame President Bush for turning Iraq into another “Viet Nam”, while it is, in fact, they who have done so with their own withering words and actions.

I don't know if an ad showing here in the Indianapolis market is airing nationally, but it shows a couple of people, including at least two vets, one by one, saying: "On the one hand..." followed by a litany of reasons why we shouldn't be in the war. This is followed by a male, whose left hand is obviously missing, saying: "On the other hand, George Bush wants to send more troops to Iraq...". Then a male comes on and tells the viewer to write to Dick Lugar (Indiana congressman) and tell him to not support sending troops more troops to Iraq. Then the real punch line: "If you support the troops, don't support the surge." (I may have the exact words wrong, but the intent is absolutely spot-on.)

These people just don't get it. Either we fight them there, or we fight them here and 9/11 is proof-positive what their agenda is. Somebody's agenda is to split this country down the middle and Hanoi Jane and her ilk are playing right into the Muslim's hands, and the media supports it all the way, even to the extreme of fabricating stories to make things look even worse. In my mind, what they are doing is treasonous.

To the Editor,

Shame on you. Mark Taylor's attempt to lump Toby Keith in with those who fail to support our troops by reference to a song that was about dates who couldn't shut up about themselves, and which in no way referenced the war effort, unfairly disparaged TK while doing nothing to support the author's point.

TK has visited and entertained the troops and provided moral support. His song "Courtesy of the Red White and Blue" was more indicative of his views, but somehow doesn't get mentioned in the article.

Please have Mr. Taylor go back to Writing 101 and do a better job of editing your articles.

Did anyone else notice the word "inadvertently", meaning unintentionally?????
We all know Toby is awesome with his support of the troops and I seriously doubt, from reading Taylor's other writings, that he intended on lumping Keith with the radical lefties.

Has anyone here actually bothered to read the article? It's worth your time... and it has nothing to do with Toby Keith. It about liberal positions on the war, and why they're wrong. The auther served in Iraq.

Of course, I slogged through the whole thing. He brings up good points, much as any reaonably bright high school kid could have done, but degrades his own case with his careless references. The word "unintentional" (yes, I saw it) doesn't get him off the hook, it just makes it sound that, at best, he sees TK as some halfwit who carelessly handed the leftists their battle cry. Sorry, it doesn't wash. I still say he needs to go back to writing school.
