Saddam's former VP sentenced to death

The Iraqi High Court has ruled that Saddam Hussein's former vice president should follow him to the gallows, despite appeals from United Nations (UN) officials and international human rights groups for his life to be spared.

"God knows I didn't do anything wrong," Taha Yassin Ramadan said shortly before judge Ali al-Kahachi sentenced him to death by hanging for his role in the killing of 148 Shiite men from the town of Dujail in the 1980s.

Ramadan was sentenced in November to life in jail for the killings, for which Saddam and two other men have already been hanged.

An appeals court recommended that Ramadan receive the death penalty and had referred the case back to the trial court for a final decision.

"In the name of the people the court decided ... to sentence the convicted, Taha Yassin Ramadan, to death by hanging for committing the crime of wilful killing as a crime against humanity," Mr Kahachi said.

New York-based Human Rights Watch had urged the court not to impose the death penalty, saying there had been a lack of evidence tying Ramadan to the Dujail killings.

"I was not assigned any mission in Dujail. All the witnesses confirmed they did not see me in Dujail," Ramadan told the court when asked if he had any final remarks before the ruling was delivered.

UN human rights chief Louise Arbour last week also urged the court to spare Ramadan's life, saying a death sentence would break international law.

"Hopefully his head will come off too."

Well, keep in mind that is somewhat messy and someone has to clean-up the mess. I'll bet that we still have a few people still alive in this country who understand the "hanging technology." Perhaps a little technical assistance would be in order here.

Luckily, he'll get years to appeal the decision

However did we survive without the gentle helping hand of the UN back at Nuremberg?

They say roses are red and violets are purple
Sugar's sweet and so's maple surple
And I'm the seventh out of seven sons
My pappy was a pistol
I'm a son of a gun.

Dang me, dang me
They oughta take a rope and hang me
High from the highest tree
Woman would you weep for me.

They'll use a new rope and he'll still complain.

Last I heard he tried to turn himself in to the US forces and they told him to get lost- He was living at his aunt's house or somethign.

I think he feared the Iraqi people would get him...

..."I was not assigned any mission in Dujail. All the witnesses confirmed they did not see me in Dujail," Ramadan told the court ...

Sounds like he is taking the court a little more seriously..

Let us see....the court (government) sentenced him to life.
An appeals court (government) doesn't like th sentence and asks for death.
The court (government) complies.

What's wrong with this picture?
