Ousted Republican US senator criticizes Bush on Israel (Lincoln Chafee)
AP ^ | February 12, 2007

Ousted Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee criticized President George W. Bush's handling of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, saying the president was bowing to a faction of evangelical Christians who oppose a Palestinian state.

"The religious thing is driving the foreign policy here," Chafee said following a speech at Brown University in which he questioned whether the president's past comments pushing for peace were sincere.

Chafee, who served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, lost his seat in November as Democrats swept into power in Congress. He landed a job at Brown's Watson Institute for International Studies following his loss to Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse.

During his speech Monday evening, Chafee described what he called Bush's unfulfilled promise of a plan for peace between Israel and the Palestinians, the so-called "road map," which calls for the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Chafee said he has wondered why the United States has not been a leader in the peace process even though Bush has said several times that he supports it. He cited comments by evangelical Christians who have said they do not think Israel should give up any land to the Palestinians.

"President Bush has embraced the concept of land for peace in word, but so far not in deed. I sometimes wonder which group has the president's ear," Chafee said.

"I have wondered something else about this president, who promised us he would be a uniter and not a divider, who led us into Iraq to vanquish the threat posed by weapons of mass destruction. Has this been a deliberate deception?" he continued.

Criticizing the president is nothing new for Chafee. He did not vote for Bush in the 2004 presidential election, writing in Bush's father, former President George H.W. Bush, as a form of protest.

The problem with idiots like this is that they feel entitled to their senate seat and can't get over it when removed. My former Congressman, Joe Schwarz has behaved the same way.

When are Christians going to acknowlege this for the anti Christian bigotry that it is?

Lincoln Chaffee should shut up. If he's looking for work, maybe Jim Leach would hire him as a houseboy.

Chaffee you were a doofus as a puling whining RINO senator and you're more of a doofus than ever. fwiw, President Bush went farther than any US President ever, in explicitly endorsing a Palestinian state (a step that never should be offered even in words without a serious commitment by the Pali-Nazis to end their terrorism). The "road map" offered the Palis the best opportunity they've ever had and they squandered it.

Stop blaming the USA or Israel, or anything except the blackened hating hearts of all the Pali-Nazis who refuse to live in peace alongside Israel.

Is it me, or does the title make it sound like Chafee was ousted by the Republicans instead of being ousted by his constituents?

The man is incoherent. Bush, the "evangelical president", is in favor of a Palestinian state and continues to push for it (and fund it) against all logic.

Its not Bush's fault that Hamas and Fatah are homicidal maniacs who would rather kill Israelis than build a functioning community, not even for all the money in the world.

Lincoln Chafee is as big of an A-hole as his late father. The nut doesn't fall far from the tree.

I am so glad this feckless twit lost. If I lived in RI I'd probably would have voted for Whitehouse just for kicks.

Lincoln was so angered by his loss that he wrote and op-ed in either the NYT or WSJ (can't remember which right now) complaining about the intelligence and actions of Rhode Island voters!

Found it!

Holding to the Center, Losing My Seat By Lincoln D. Chafee

LAST Tuesday, I was one of the many moderate Republican casualties of the anti-Bush virulence that swept the country. Despite my having voted against the Iraq war resolution, my reputation for independence, the editorial endorsement of virtually every newspaper in my state, and a job approval rating of 63 percent, I did not win. Why?

The link above is to a FR thread, which the internal link is to the NY Times. But here it is linked elsewhere in full... Clicky

Nothing but whining and bitching he got booted. I'm a victim! I'm a victim!

Correct!

Chaffe is missing from congress. The missing Linc(oln)?

Link knows how to pay back W. W went to bat for Link over in preference to the conservative Republican in the primary. Now link sprinkles W with liberal waste water.
