Yes, this should have been done years ago.

Probably part of the cleanup operation in Bagdad...and to keep Iranian 'diplomats' from hightailing it home. You guys got it all wrong!
Bank of America requested the borders be closed, to give undocumented Syrians and Iranians the opportunity to obtain the new credit card they're offering to undocumented aliens in the US.
BofA estimates they can handle the surge in applications over the next 72 hours.

That's why this time it is different. Kill or capture, no more capture and release. Bush obviously told Maliki that we do it my way or we leave. Didn't anybody listen to what Bush said last month in his Iraq speech? I swear!

Maybe they should just take some Iranian advice and simply 'wipe them (both) off the map'....Kidding.

Do you mean they've been open all this time? Jeepers, doesn't one think that the borders should have been closed since the invasion?

Can they come here and close ours too?
To: spacejunkie
Are you telling us that the brainiacs in the Pentagon just thought of this? The entire border between Iraq and Iran and Iraq and Syria should have a clearly marked DMZ that is two to three miles wide. Relocate any towns and villages in that zone and then warn in writing and over the airways in as many languages as necessary that everyone and anyone, including women, children, and old people, are subject to immediate termination if caught in the DMZ, and then do it, no exceptions, no excuses. If you are in the DMZ, then you are or will be very dead.

Why now? Why only three days?
This doesn't make any sense.

Maybe nothing.
Maybe more.
Closing a border to civvies is something you want done before you start shooting across it.
You also might do it for other reasons.
Either way, eyes peeled.

Good plan. My only question is why were they open in the first place?

Do they think that military arms only enter through approved checkpoints? Don't they still make camels over there?

These borders should have been sealed prior to the invasion....
but of course, the US is a land of open borders and naive (or paid for) politicians.
To: BurbankKarl
I think borders were left open to allow civilians to flee if they wished. Also to allow goods and materials (of the helpful variety) to be replenished. We recall Israel left the Syrian border open to allow refugees to flee Lebanon. Its all a calculated guess. I'm sure plenty of planning and research went into the decision.

The problem is, it was thought that this war was over several years ago. Why close the border of a country after a war you have already won?
It's finally sinking in that this war has never been won, and people are now thinking about doing things that they should have planned for and "accomplished" years ago.
To: mikhailovich
Well, you can certainly allow people to leave...
To: jeffers
This move makes no sense...why only close it for 3 days? The bad guys can just wait them out.
