When I first read this story yesterday it brought tears to my eyes..I was in Nam at this time...I was out of Clark AB servimg with the 7AF HDQTRs in Saigon...I was a Air Force Mobile Comm...We were called Black Hatters..http://1stmob.com/index.htm
The unit is still active today in Iraq but under another name.....I have watched the movie so many times at home and each and every time it has an effect on me...I am so happy for Bruce Crandall...and his family...When this battle was going on we got lots of updates and there was so much concern about what was going on...I know that there was several Air Force vets who would have volunteered in a heart beat to help but we were told we did not have the combat capabilities...I have been reading your post here for along time ...Ronnie I have the up most respect for you and the others who fought in this battle....
I saw the results as those that payed the ultimate price were brought into the morgue at Tan Son Nhut and then shipped home...Some of the images that I saw when I walked by the morgue are still etched in my mind to this day....I went to the terminal one day to send off a friend who was headed back to Japan...I met one of the soldiers who fought with you..He was headed home...I sit and talked to him for a while because it seem that I was almost talking to a dead man walking...I say that with respect...I told him how much I respected what he had done and wished him well...He told me he lost allot of friends during that time and his life would never ever be the same....I do not know what happened to him but my prayers are with him till this day.....Hearing news like this makes me proud to have served not only in Nam but with Men like Bruce Crandell...Even though we were in different branches. We all served..I am proud of my service and extremely proud of yours and Bruce Crandalls......Wes
