Report: Iraq a Lost Cause, US Should Withdraw

(CNSNews.com) - Securing Iraq is a lost cause for U.S. forces, and President Bush should begin withdrawing troops to avoid "floundering ineffectually" and further damaging U.S. credibility, a report issued by the Council on Foreign Relations concludes.

"The American intervention in Iraq unseated a murderous despot in April 2003," Steven Simon, a senior fellow at CFR, acknowledges in the report, originally published last week but presented Wednesday in a teleconference.

"It also triggered the collapse of the Iraqi state, plunged the country into a civil war that brought about the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians, wrecked the country's already debilitated infrastructure, and spurred violent sectarian rivalries that threatened to spill over into the broader Middle East," Simon added.

Simon said that by beginning to withdraw troops from Iraq - with a goal of having them out by the end of 2008 - the United States can minimize the damage to its international and military credibility he says is being caused by staying in Iraq.

"The time has come to acknowledge that the United States must fundamentally recast its commitment to Iraq," he wrote. "It must do so without any illusions that there are unexplored or magic fixes, whether diplomatic or military. Some disasters are irretrievable."

The Council on Foreign Relations: A bunch of hand wringers, pessimists and defeatists more interested in process than results.

Good idea: Let's leave Iraq and let the terrorists have it. That'll make things a lot better in that part of the world.

Council on Cutting and Running rehashes DNC talking points. Blah-bletty-Blah-Blah. Bush doesn't care what you spineless whiners say. He has a plan and he is sticking to it. All your whining is not worth a squirt of piss, so take your report and shove it straight up your arse, losers.

The Council on Foreign Relations should disband. It has neither formulated effective policy prescriptions nor gotten them implemented in its decades of existence. It is time for this organization to dissolve itself before it does any more damage to the credibility of liberal foreign policy ideas.

Oh yeah, let's pull out of this quagmire and let
the triumphant jihadi victory celebrations begin.

Realistically, no matter what happens, there will not be many US troops in Iraq after 2008.

Correct me if I'm wrong but both the German State and the Japanese State collapsed in 1945. That was the whole idea of the war. We were then involved heavily in setting up new states.

Yeah, I think Al Sadr was shrieking "It's a lost cause" as he headed for the border.

Let me save you the time of having to read the article. Here's what it boils down to:

Time is running our for America forces to withdraw from Iraq at a 'cut and run' solution to the situation there. We are on the verge of turning this thing around and once that happens we will no longer have the 'Vietnam Option' open to you. Consider ourselves warned.

There, that should do it!

plunged the country into a civil war that brought about the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians...

This always annoys me because of its disingenuousness. As compared to what??? Saddam-era murder??? Way more people died under his brutal regime (as a means of a minority controlling a majority) than are dying during this sectarian violence. At least there is hope that this sectarian violence will taper off. There was NO hope that Saddam would ever slow down his raping and pillaging of Iraqi's. The media and the left always try to portray a situation where life in Iraq was peaceful and idyllic before our "meddling". Nothing could be further from the truth.

All specious arguments. Spill over? What about the spill-over of Iranian QUD thugs into other countries, such as Lebanon? Iran is NOT a status quo power, and hasn't been since 1979. The spill has been INTO Iraq.

You are correct and it took time, money and a whole lot of lives before they became the democratic nations they are today.

In hindsight, knowing what we do now, I might not ever have gone into Iraq. I'm glad that Saddam and his sons are dead. Lots of Iraqis are glad too. Now we have the centuries-old tribal and sectarian hatred sorting itself out. It's not easy trying to herd these cats, but if we just leave, we leave behind a whole lot of hungry, feral cats.

Ahhh, the do-nothing, good for nothing country club Republican Goldwaterites speak. Yes, a retreat from Iraq would do so much good for America's security position. The report claims a retreat would prevent further damaging U.S. credibility. Among home? Eurotrash? Who cares? What about U.S. credibility among the terrorists, that they are shown the U.S. won't flee a tough fight or abandon a direct confrontation to Al Qaeda?? Why is the CFR more interested in restoring U.S. "credibility" with absolutely spineless "allies" in Old Europe and not the credibility of our word with those who fight for their lives and their liberty, something the Eurolosers have long forgotten the importance and at times the necessity of, with U.S. backing encouraging their heroic struggle?? Why is that credibility not important? What about the credibility of the U.S. as a reliable partner in the war on terror? What about the credibilty of U.S. resolve to confront the terrorists among the terrorists themseles? Who among freedom loving peoples would ever again be able to trust the word of the U.S. again if we give in to the retreat and defeat policies of traitors in the Democratic party and those who call themselves, unworthily, Republicans?

I wonder why so many Iraqis are stepping forward and joining the Iraqi army and police, and dying for the cause. Answer me that. The Iraqi army was in heavy action today -- Why?

The MSM does not acknowledge the fact that Saddam was the cause of 1.3 Million Iraqi deaths, as mass graves being uncovered, continue to support the original estimations, of his political enemies who disappeared under his dictatorship.

But they still try to convince us that Iraq was much better off with him still in power. Sadly, they have convinced most of the ignorant public in this country that they are correct.

How many of those will be among the 7,000 Iraqis (islamists?)(for starters) to be admitted to the United States?

Yeh, let's take back the bombs we just dropped on Bagdad. Like less bad guys to kill now...
Watch, as has been posted by others, The closer our troops get to controlling the military situation and the MORE bad guys they kill, the LOUDER msm. demorats, rinos, libs, will scream. Sit back, watch the show and know who you can trust to keep American strong, regardless of envious folks hating us. Bush's resolve drives these folks nuts. They will NOT understand courage.
