France Making Deals With Iran?

Jerusalem (CNSNews.com) - French President Jacque Chirac wants to ease pressure on Iran to prevent the Iranian-backed Hizballah from attacking French troops serving with U.N. forces in Lebanon, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported on Thursday. Iran is facing the threat of international sanctions because of its nuclear program. Chirac reportedly plans to send a special envoy to Tehran to negotiate a deal to protect French troops. France is a major contributor to the U.N. interim force in Lebanon, which was beefed up as part of a ceasefire agreement that ended last summer's Israeli-Hizballah war. Chirac's position is said to be "controversial" in Paris. Last month, Chirac said in an interview that it wouldn't be so bad if Iran had one or two nuclear bombs, but he quickly backtracked on his statement. Meanwhile, al Qaeda's number-two leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, has called on Muslims in Lebanon to reject the U.N. Security Council resolution that ended the Israeli-Hizballah war. He urged "the brothers of Islam and of Jihad in Lebanon" not to yield to the resolution or accept "the presence of international and crusader forces in South Lebanon." Al-Zawahiri charged that "the American plot in Lebanon is the same as in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the Gulf countries, Algeria and Somalia."

Yes, the French are making deals with Iran, but it has more to do with an off shore natural gas field than it does their troops in Lebanon.

In addition to be cheese eating surrender monkeys the French are self interested, oil hungry, gas bags.

That man is pitiful.

I'm too disgusted to comment on the French.

Chirac is now openly admitting he ordered French citizen-soldiers to be held as hostages of the religious fanatics of the Middle East.

The French grunts on the ground in Lebanon must be pretty damn pissed at this point.

Oh, no, the you have that wrong, the French are only opposed to the US going to war for oil, oil that the French already have contracts for. The French oil company, Total SA, already has dealings with every US hating, socialist or communist dictator in every oil producing country in the world. The new head of TOTAL, De Margerey is supposed to be under investigation for the oil for food scandal, but of course nothing has come of it because Chirac and Villepin were also involved.

Sorry not to be very transparent - implied juxtaposition and [silent] "/s" :~)

Yeah, Chirac and his buddy Villepin tried to set up Sarkozy in sort of equivalent of Plamegate - Clearstream affair. Fortunately, it blew up on them as Sarkozy fought back.

BTW, Royal is doing "Hillary" with her TOTAL "incredible profits" shtick. how long before they "do full Chavez" [credit goes to Charles Krauthammer] and call for nationalizing oil industry? Royal doesn't seem to be doing very well, though - that's a relief.

I don't know what part the French gov't owns of Total, but all the higher ups own a good size share in their own personal perfolios. What isn't nationalized, is incestual.
