The former president is expected to headline the annual dinner of the New York State Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators.
The exact subject of his address isn't yet known. But the subtext that's drawing him to the State Capital on a Sunday night in the dead of winter; his wife's bid for the White House.
"Politics 101," said Keith Wright.
The black community is vital in capturing the Democratic primary from challenger Barack Obama. And observers and officials believe Bill Clinton finally accepted the longstanding offer for that reason -- to shore up Hillary Clinton's support among African-American state lawmakers.
Longtime Harlem Assemblyman Keith Wright is the former chairman of the legislative association and plans to be there this weekend.
"I'm sure that he wants to make a pitch if you will, by virtue of his presence for his wife, certainly," Wright said.
Senator Clinton hasn't picked up any major endorsements yet from New York's black elected officials. Nor has Al Sharpton signaled who he'll support -- his own senator, or Obama.
"It's almost like shopping if you will -- we're looking at candidates and seeing who has what to offer," added Wright.
Spokespeople for the Clintons didn't return calls.
Bill Clinton's speech comes as he works largely behind the scenes for his wife. He is enormously popular in the black community, and reportedly helped her secure major African American support in South Carolina. That state hosts the first southern primary.
He'll be using the same popularity and charm this weekend, before a hometown crowd.
Amusing, really. The gall of that woman. Hill will promise the moon to blacks and Hispanics to keep them in line. Of course, we -- the general dumb public -- will pay through the nose, but that's life with Hill and Bill.

If a politician spoke at a Klan meeting he would be forever blackballed and lynched in the media,yet speaking to the same thing only of a different race is perfectly kool.
Racism is not a white only game,but only whites are condemned for it.

In other words, how much will the democrat candidate be willing to steal from everyone else's paycheck and how much of it will the New York State Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators get.

Oh, there he is. Bubba's been keeping such a low profile lately, I was beginning to think that he might be Nicole Ann Simpson's kid's father.
