When Bob Hunter, a Riverside, Calif., businessman, would hear of a conservative's campaign that needed volunteers, he would pile his family into the station wagon and drive off to ring doorbells. Hunter's son Duncan grew up believing in retail politics.
When Hunter returned home after serving as an alternate Goldwater delegate at the 1964 Republican convention in San Francisco, he told Duncan about chatting with another alternate, an amiable fellow, some actor, named Reagan. Who two years later was elected governor. Duncan learned early on about rapid upward mobility in politics.
In 1969, he dropped out of college, joined the army and was sent to Vietnam. From there he mailed his pay to a friend who purchased for him an island in Idaho's Snake River, where Duncan farmed after his discharge. Then another friend said a San Diego law school would admit him without a college degree. In 1980 he was a lawyer with a storefront office in San Diego's Hispanic community when his father walked in and told him he could be a congressman. Never mind, his father said, that this district was only 29 percent Republican. Reagan was at the top of the ticket.
Duncan says his Baptist minister, respecting the separation of church and state, told parishioners they should vote for the Reagan of their choice. They distributed 400,000 Duncan brochures. Today Duncan is in his 14th term representing eastern San Diego County. Three weeks ago he formally launched his presidential candidacy.
Why does he think he can become the first House member elected president since James Garfield in 1880? Why does he think he can do better than the two strongest House candidates in recent elections?

Did you like how he handled the gun situation?
Yes I do know. I know lots!
He's my choice.
Just curious, but under Guiliani, what do you attribute the decrease in the murders and crime in NY to?
Rudy dresses in drag and you're gonna condemn Hunter for not buttoning his jacket?
I've already thought about it. The viable candidates this election are McCain, Giuliani, and maybe Romney. You go to war with the army you have, not the army you want in the future.
If George Allen was running, the social cons would have had a viable candidate. But George Allen lost on his own turf in a confederate state. Running a Hunter or a Tancredo nationally will simply be a repeat of 2006, but worse. In off-year elections turning out the base counts, while in presidential elections, you have to appeal to moderates. In the off-year election the almighty conservative base couldn't even put Talent, Santorum, Allen, and many other solid conservatives over the top. Why should I believe they can carry us in 2008?
If you want to reverse the trend and put more conservatives back in Congress, you have to elect someone who has the charisma and toughness to put the Democrats back on defense. That means you nominate your All-Star, not a benchwarmer.
Rudy wasn't inspecting the troops, he was fundraising for charity. Now look at the Hunter pictures Luke. Hunter has great conservative credentials, but he is a slob (with a mean look most of the time). Credentials are one thing, but you have to have a Presidential persona. This guy could work a used car lot.
'When was the last Congresscritter elected as President of the United States?"
When was the last time a mayor was elected president?
I like that one! Columbo was one of those characters who understood connections when others couldn't ... like Duncan understanding the connection between our bad trade policies, our foundational industries leaving the country, and the war we're in and will be in for the next twenty years with perhaps a very hot spot now and then requiring war machinery we cannot afford to be buying overseas if we can maintain the industry here at home with better trade policies. Great cut and paste, Registered.
'And oh yeah ... Duncan sees the destructiveness of not stopping the southern boarder invasion.'
Thanks for the comments. Yeh, Columbo was a great character, and having him as a President would have really been hilarious.
I did, been waiting, nothings come yet!!
Personally i like the look duncan has for the most part.
I think GWB is handsome and always looks so put together, but politicians all look the same. Duncan looks like a REAL man, not a stuffed suit.
He doesnt come off as some rich, aging frat boy or like brek girl...i could name many. I think itll work in his favor.
maybe a hair cut ;)
Even if he APPEARS to get it right, at this point, itd be nothing but pandering. no thanks.
Thank God we at last have SOMEONE we can vote for:
"For some candidates," Hunter says, "the conservative constituency is an inconvenience. For me, it is my hope."
This succinctly says why we should be getting behind him.
It's cogence reminds me of Lt. General McCaulliff in WW-II at Bostogne, surrounded by an overwhelming German force, was issued a surrender demand.
He told the Germans: "NUTS!"
General Patton when he heard of that said..."A man of such rare eloquence as that deserves to be rescued."
And he did so turning North with his entire 250,000-strong Army arriving just in time at Bastogne.
Lt. Gen. McCaullif receiving the DSC from General Patton upon being reinforced at Bastogne.
So, we the Conservative Base have a like-opportunity to line up with Duncan Hunter...to prove our metal.
