And the reason for bringing this up now is

"I do not support Roe vs. Wade. It should be overturned," - to pander to the right....

"I think that Donald Rumsfeld will go down in history as one of the worst secretaries of defense in history," - to pander to the left....

He's making sure all the bases are covered and that both sides are pandered to equally...that's how he intends to get the "middle".
