This discussion of refugees, ship voyages, and deaths as that of Anne Frank would perhaps never exist if the Democracies had moved strongly against Hitler and Mussolini and Imperial Japan in the 1930's instead of permitting them to achieve formidable status.

That did not occur - in the U. S. particularly because of isolationist and pacifist sentiment.

As a consequence, 50 to 60 million persons were killed in WWII (that military/civilian number is correct) including 400,000 U. S. service men and women, and five to six million European Jews.

Today, the decrying of "preventive war" is made against the U. S. and allies, and especially against Bush and John Major, for having the audacity to attempt to annihilate terrorists and terrorist states before they attain the scale of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan.

Terrorists can carry out horrific attacks today, as through a small vial of smallpox bacillus that can result in the deaths of millions.

We would do well to kill them abroad where necessary and change their states rather than awaiting them here in geometrically stronger mode than they would have been if we had not acted.

Perhaps, but it was not really possible for the US to do so. A much better question is why Britain and France didn't move more aggressively against Hitler in the 1930s. Much has been written on that subject, and I don't have much to contribute beyond regurgitating what I've read. I would just caution you to avoid blaming the Allies for the crimes of their enemies.

A much more important consideration than 70,000 immigration slots or a few hundred thousands who might have made it to Palestine.
