Military intelligence services (WSI) report may give Russians cause toworry - Polish PM

WARSAW. FEBRUARY 20. INTERFAX CENTRAL EUROPE - The publication of a report revealing alleged irregularities at Poland's Military Intelligence Services (WSI), which also identifies alleged Russian spies, may give Russians cause to worry, Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said on a Radio 1 morning program, Tuesday.

"The Russians are probably very worried that the secret service in which they had very large influences for a very long time, in which tens, hundreds of persons schooled by [the Russian Central Intelligence Directorate] GRU and the [secret services] KGB worked for a very long time and this, in managerial positions, has now been terminated," Jaroslaw Kaczynski said.

The 374-page report includes a 33-page long section entitled "Russian penetration," which states the Soviet and Russian secret police placed permanent residents within the Polish military intelligence services during the Communist times and within WSI after the collapse of Communism.

The PM commented on the Russian media's surprise at the publication of the details of many agents, something which they claim has never been done in the history of intelligence services.

"Not only is the network of agents, built over years and kept in strict secrecy revealed, but also the operational inner workings and procedures," Russian daily Vremya Novostey wrote Monday.

Analysts told Interfax on Monday that the publication of the report is not likely to worsen already "catastrophic" Polish-Russian relations.
