Sorry, but you sound like a 'hippie' to me with your 'how it should be' painting.
So you need an id that can be shared between states and its a HUGE deal because someone can abuse that?
National ID is just doing to driver's licenses (which ARE already used as a national ID!) what has been done in every other sector since 1970.
If that scares you, then sorry about that grandpa... but again... grow up.

Most states have been using these standards for a long time. What everyone is yelling about not happening has been in their back pockets for years.
They already got you and it hasn't hurt you at all.
