ABOUT 350 anti-Iraq war protesters last night formed a hostile welcome committee for US Vice-President Dick Cheney, clashing with police outside Sydney's Town Hall as they ignored calls for peaceful protests.
Mounted police officers and members of the riot squad scuffled with protesters in scenes reminiscent of violent anti-globalisation protests at the G20 summit in Melbourne last year.
The crowd, led by members of the Stop The War Coalition, marched down George Street - one of Sydney's main streets - without permission from police, who cited traffic concerns for the decision.
The clashes occurred when protesters attempted to break through the wall of police officers. Ten protesters were arrested.
Road closures to ensure Mr Cheney's motorcade received a green-light corridor on one of several secret routes also caused traffic chaos in parts of the city hours before his arrival last night.
Just two days after the arrival of cruise liners Queen Mary II and Queen Elizabeth II left tens of thousands of spectators stranded in a gridlocked CBD, the NSW Government faces more tough questions on the eve of a state election about its handling of traffic.
NSW Deputy Police Commissioner Terry Collins yesterday warned that the protest organisers did not have permission to stage the march from Town Hall to the US consulate near Martin Place. But leaders of the Stop The War Coalition said adequate notice had been given.
"Police have attempted to drive the anti-war protest off the street," coalition spokeswoman Jean Parker told the crowd. "We will not be silenced."
Protesters carried placards bearing slogans such as "Cheney is a torturer" and "Go home Cheney, take Howard hunting".

I'll bet these punks would bend over and spread their cheeks for the islamists.
Not so. These people have absolutely no happiness other than to make life miserable for others.
VP Cheney didn't bring out the hate. College professors, liberal hacks and ignorance did.
I love Dick Cheney!
Violent peacenicks. Oh, the irony.
LOL I never get tired of that. Each time I see it, it's as though I've seen it for the first time.

Poor Dick, the ultimate stern, authoritarion figure that remind these (still) children of their "mean" daddies.
reminds!
"We will not be silenced."
Kudos to the patience of your police force! I don't know how they resist the temptation to knock a few heads...
lol that's great. I haven't seen that one before.
It's very interesting to me to see those who hate John Howard. Particularly interesting when you see that Australia hasn't been better off financially in its entire history. When unemloyment rates are lower than they've been in over a generation.
Yet they still hate the man and all the growth his policies engendered...
He must be doing something right.
