Joshua Socolar, a Duke university physicist, said it is unclear whether the mediaeval Islamic artisans fully understood the mathematical properties of the patterns they were making.

Well, it's clear they didn't. Anyone who says differently better be able to come up with the arabic manuscripts that show otherwise. They got lucky. They had craftsmen and tradesmen doing tilings for centuries. They were interested in it -- as a trade. Not as mathematics. Most likely they copied something they saw in nature, or something they saw in nature gave them the idea. They might have even stolen it from India, as they did many other things. Islamo-arabic culture invents nothing, contributes nothing, discovers nothing. It's a primitive, backward, stagnant, as dead culture.

You are right, and even the math and science they get credited for is mostly just Greek learning which they copied. They should get credit only for maintaining the magnificent works of the ancients, but very little was invented by them.

LOL, and you have 'proof' of this against what most historians have been saying for a long time. Don't worry I know there are a few crank sites out there that say otherwise that you'll be able to quote from and support your 'position'. While most of us may disagree with what Islam is and its current followers, it is not traitorous to accept that they did contribute quite a bit to our understanding of science and mathematics. Not to mention hospitals, optics,......

And during the middle ages, most of those artisans doing tile work were ... Greeks.

True. Unfortunately, the multiculti's are out in force to denigrate the greatest civilization in history - Christendom - and to extol one of the most backward. If one talks to ethic Chaldeans today they will point out that most of what is attributed to Islam's golden age was the work of the residual influence of the Christian cultures that the Mohammedans overran. The reason Islam's cultural advances stopped in the 8th or 9th centuries was that Islam destroyed what remained of the influence of those cultures over a few generations.

Mohammed, barbeque sauce be upon him, destroyed the advanced Christian civilizations of the Middle East. That is the actual accomplishment of Islam.
