If last weeks attempt on the life of Congressman Horacio Garza does not awaken the conscience of our neighbors in Nuevo Laredo, then we dont know what will. Or, perhaps, we dont know our friends across the creek.
People on both sides were shocked, but not surprised, by reports that Garza had sustained serious wounds and his driver killed in last Monday nights ambush en route to the international airport.
WE CAUGHT A MEXICAN network interview by Joaquin Lopez Doriga of Televisa where Garza says he was the assaults target. Garza was emotionally moved by the death of his driver and friend, Hector Morales Juarez. Morales Juarez died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
Garza talked to Mexican and American television viewers in a teleconference with Televisa nightly news anchor Lopez Doriga. The PRI lawmaker told Doriga that he was convinced that he, not his driver, was the target.
I was the target, he said, adding that it was an organized crime reaction to public statements denouncing the border lawlessness on the Tamaulipas border with Texas, particularly Nuevo Laredo.
They are not going to scare or silence me. Criminal elements are holding Nuevo Laredo hostage, Garza said. I will continue to speak out and press in my capacity in the Congress to put a stop to all this violence.
In his conversation, Garza stressed the concerns of President Felipe Calderón, Tamaulipas Gov. Eugenio Hernandez Flores and Nuevo Laredo Mayor Daniel Peña Treviño. Hes well aware of concern and outrage among Nuevo Laredos residents.
COUNTLESS LOCALS FROM the public and private sector know the former Nuevo Laredo mayor well. Friends and acquaintances have suggested that Garza put the issue squarely on Calderóns table.
He should ask the President how long people in Nuevo Laredo have to wait to bring tranquility to this community, a restaurant owner told this corner. How many more people have to be bribed, kidnapped, tortured or killed? Our streets are not safe for our own residents and visitors. How long?

"You're either with us or against us" is the REAL DEAL in Mexico.
Texas Congressmen are not likely to spend much time around Laredo, IMO.
